It's gotten to a point that has gone beyond excitingly dangerous to just foolish. Worse still, Ace isn't content to love the captain silently anymore. He knows it's stupid. It's stupid to even be in love with the man. And he highly doubts Smoker loves him back. But Ace wants to tell the world how much he loves the marine and that's a sure way to get the both of them killed.
