Some thoughts on Torchwood and Russell T...  (turn away if you're easily offended)

Put John Barrowman in a red uniform, give him a Cary Grant-style accent and it could have been that indestructible and indispensable member of Spectrum.  Come to think of it, Spectrum's job was to deal with ( Read more... )

Indeed, George Lucas didn't come up with it. Take the 'coincidence' in Jane Eyre with St.John and his sisters being Jane's cousins (which I mention since it has just finished airing here). Then there's Woman in White with the half-sister link. I'm sure if I sat and thought about it long enough I'd come up with quite a few. I suppose what used to be great drama a hundred to two hundred years ago, is now cliche ( ... )

I think Victor Hugo is possibly the worst culprit - pretty well all of his characters are related to each other by blood or coincidence.

I read the Times interview on my way up to Oxford and passed it round when I got there. It was greeted with the expected gnashing of teeth. He really did seem to be going out of his way to insult as many people as possible - you missed out people who don't enjoy reality shows from the Russell T hitlist - but I suppose that since he's a "very, very experieneced and sucessful TV writer" we should be grateful that we have him to show us the light.

I did enjoy a lot about Torchwood but, like so many people whose opinions I've seen, I really wish that British TV writers would remember that "tits and arse" isn't the only way to interpret the word "adult" when it comes to programming.

Yes, and I'm one of them! I personally don't know how he can claim that Big Brother is 'fascinating and powerful because it shows the tiny details of people's relationship.' To me 'invasive' and 'appalling' would be better descriptions. However, I don't 'despise' people who do like it. I can think of better reasons for despising people than their TV choices!

Russell T's boastful claim to be a "very, very experienced and sucessful TV writer" just says it all really, doesn't it?

Opaline...how lovely see you online at last !!!

Well, I just LOVED "Torchwood" and will forgive Russell T Davies almost anything so long as he comes up with stuff like this ...it was dark, sexy, funny, and exciting, even though it was only a scene/character setting up scenario...

Captain Jack : "He came and went...." ...ROFL - That certainly got me going...Excellent stuff ( ... )

"He came and went...."

That was funny, but, alas, not a Russell T original. That joke was doing the rounds when I was a teenager:

'Why is semen white and urine yellow? So a man can tell whether he's coming or going.'

(The original was 'Irishman', but those jokes have their origin in the English oppression of the Celts, and the Irish don't appreciate them, despite what people think. Much funnier as an anti-man joke anyway.)

Sorry, forgot to add that I probably won't be staying for lunch on Friday. I'm meant to be in Somerset by the evening! Send me the details anyway though - things have a habit of changing.

That joke is funny every time I hear it, and you are right, it is an old one !!

Hmmm, lunch on Friday...probably at our old favourite Bali-Bali...Janet ( Brummie ) hasn't been there, I don't think, and neither has Pamela (Honeyelf )...and Julie really liked it anyway...

By the way, like a fool, I totally forgot to wish you a very Happy Birthday...I do hope you had a FAB day !!!
