She arrives back home late after midnight and slips silently through the door. She's padding across the living room floor when the light flashes on. She stills immediately, but it's too late. "Buffy -- " Joyce begins, glowering furiously at her, and launches into one of her typical tirades about how she worries about her.
There's so much Buffy wants to say that she can't. She can't tell her mother she worries about her, too, or mention the fact that every time she saves the world, she's saving her too, so she finally heads to bed without a word and unshed tears.
