I bought the first DVD of Haruhi today. Getting it from rightstuf.com was very nice: 50% off. So we'll see how it is. And sadly, yet another year goes by where I'm not attending ConnectiCon or Otakon. But hopefully I'll have a job interview to blame for that. Really I just need to go to these conventions to keep up on and sample new anime.
I've heard that the series is being distributed in chapter order, except for in the limited edition sets, where it's ordered as it was originally broadcast in Japan. Knowing how they ended the series, that bugs me.
By chapter order you mean how the manga was released? And which one is technically "correct" in that the story is best told? I'm just not really sure by what you mean for a lot of that.
The original series is a collection of novels (up to at least 9 volumes so far). The animated series covers about the first two, I think. By chapter order, I mean the order the novels put them in (in other words, chronological order). When the anime was first broadcast, the episodes were flipped around some to the director's own idea of storytelling, and the final episode was the end of volume 1.
Baka-Tsuki has the translations project going on, if you're curious.
