hooky (or, lee jinki's day off)
jonghyun x onew , humor/romance , pg-13 , 2830w
jonghyun says he's going to take a day off, and drags jinki into it.  school be damned, they're gonna have fun.

hooky (or, lee jinki's day off);

jinki stares at the blinking number on his cell.  six thirty two in the morning and the kid has the balls to call.  he picks up the phone.

"hello," he murmurs into the speaker, a bit confusedly, because he doesn't know what this guy has planned already in his ungodly hour for this god awful, ugly day.  "jonghyun, stop breathing into the phone, your number's not hidden."

"hey," comes the response, "i'm skipping school today."

jinki groans.  poor parents.  "what's your excuse?"

"i'm thinking a regular cold.  go for something easy, clammy hands, fever.  mom falls for it all the time."

"that's because you're the world's greatest actor," jinki jokes, but not really, as he leans against his closet door and tucks the phone between his shoulder and ear and slips on his pants.  he struggles with the button.  "well, you have fun.  it's going on your record."

jonghyun laughs heartily into the phone, and it makes jinki wonder just what this kid has for breakfast for him to have this much energy to laugh that boisterously.  the last time jinki laughed hard just minutes after waking up (it was because of the picture jonghyun sent of gwiboon accidentally flashing her laced panties during lunch) he had such a migraine, he fell back onto his bed and slept it off for a good hour.

"come on, now," jonghyun starts and there's that sick feeling in jinki's stomach again, "you don't expect me to go alone, do you?"

"you're right."  jinki puts on the iron-pressed blazer his mom left for him the night before.  "you and taemin have fun."

the boy laughs again, "nah, wouldn't take him out on such a snowy day.  too frail for that."  jinki snorts.  "jinki, don't ignore me.  come with me, i'll treat you, we'll go skating."

"last time i went skating," he grunts, pulling on his scarf, "i fell and ripped my pants.  actually, come to think of it, you pushed me and then i fell and ripped my pants.  in front of everyone in school, i mean, no big deal."

"jinki, jinki," jonghyun's persistent voice filters through the plastic of the phone and jinki sighs, "no one really remembers that.  and it's fine, everyone'll be in school and we'll be out together and if you rip your pants again, well, to hell with anyone who sees!  they'll never recognize you."

jinki slips through his door and tiptoes past his parents' bedroom, his voice dropping an octave lower, "i can't skip, jonghyun, my parents would skewer me."

"you always say that, jinki.  fact is, they love you too much to do that."  he pauses.  "and my parents love me too much to force me to go to school when i'm sick.  come on, gotta give them some credit."

"no, jonghyun.  that's that."

"fine."

three hours later, in his self-study period, jinki receives a note from minho who had received it from krystal, from sulli, from donghae and eunhyuk, from taemin.  jinki gives the kid a glare and stumbles out of the classroom, saying he wasn't feeling so good.  the message read "outside the rec center, come out, bought chicken."  the perfect lure.  kid knows him too well.

and, well, maybe he's just too much of a pushover.

of course he would forget his scarf in class on the coldest day of the winter.  and of course jonghyun wouldn't really have the chicken as he saunters on over with his arms wide open.

"i'll buy you some," jonghyun says with a smirk, and he wraps his cold fingers around jinki's before he tugs.

they don't eat, not for another hour and a half, and instead spend their time first in the bookstore a few blocks down.  the store manager gives them a funny look as they titter over the mags and graphic novels before he yells at them to get the hell out if they're not buying anything.  jinki puts down his copy of the latest volume of naruto, but jonghyun insists on staying a bit more to maybe sneak around the adult section until the manager comes chasing after them with a snow-covered broom.

then they stop by the pet store because jonghyun is head over heels for those little puppies (he says it's because they "look like him," narcissistic freak), and jinki spends his time staring at the quiet congo tetra ("phennocogrammus interuptus," who in korea can actually pronounce that?) swimming around in the confines of their tank.  he awkwardly smirks at the fish, the bleak, weathered stones, his reflection in the glass.  jonghyun gently grabs his arm just when jinki feels like dunking his head in the fish water and says something in a not-quite-there-but-still-is tone of concern.  jinki smiles.  he barely misses the aerial parrot poop as they step out of the store.

they sit on an isolated bench placed along the quiet streets, jonghyun reading the town newspaper with an odd look of concentration.

"are you even reading that?" jinki laughs, and jonghyun's curt nod silences him.  he says a few seconds later, "that's rich."

"i don't get it."

jinki peers over the boy's shoulder and opens his mouth to ask if he needs a possible translation or something, but when his eyes land on the comic strip of the week, he smacks the paper out of jonghyun's hands, and the kid laughs.

"i'm hungry," jonghyun declares into the greyish dusky sky, and jinki nods.  "still want the chicken?"

"only reason i'm still out here."

jonghyun grins.  "good.  i have coupons for two."

there's a pretty girl behind the counter of the chicken store they drop by, mussy hair in a bun and smooth eye makeup almost making her eyes glow despite the rather dreary situation she's in.  jinki loves chicken and all, but he'd never work here, thinking all the chicken juices might mutate his cells and he'd end up growing some feathers.  it'd be weird cannibalism, he mulls to himself, as jonghyun drops the box in between them, both rows of teeth bright and shining.  he finally brings himself to look at jonghyun who gives him a weird look.

"she's cute," jinki speaks up over the slurping of soda.  the boy raises both his brows, links his fingers together in a thinking fashion as he tilts his head to the right.

"you think so?" jonghyun asks, and jinki nods.  a grin.  "should i get her number for you?"  he smiles at the girl, who smiles back, and jinki stares at him and wonders how he has that uncanny ability.  of stealing people's hearts and then dropping them like flies.

jinki splutters, "i can do it myself," but he never does in the end as he quickly throws away the leftover bones and stumbles out of the store with jonghyun laughing behind him and shooting the girl behind the counter a nice little wink.

"why didn't you?"

"didn't want to bother her."  never mind the fact that they were the only two in the store.  "come on, i need some coffee."

jonghyun sidles up next to jinki and blows a puff of hot air into his face, obviously smelling like chicken.  jinki gags.  "kibum works part time at starbucks."

"it's too much money."

jonghyun shakes his head, "jinki, jinki, jinki, what'd i tell you?  my treat."  they turn into the starbucks before they know it and two minutes into entering jonghyun and kibum get into this argument over how kibum charged extra just because he hates him.  jinki just watches idly from a couch with the paper cup twirling clockwise in his hands.

"douche," jonghyun drops on the couch with a sigh, one arm relaxingly hooked around the back and over jinki's shoulder.  jinki squirms.  "nice day so far, huh?"

"we could've just done this after school," he offers and almost burns his tongue when jonghyun jostles about and harrumphs.

"but the fact that we're not in school, and having fun like this," jonghyun says, "is what makes it so special and nice.  right?"

jinki stares at his friend, the poor sap with the large eyes full of fun and mouth of wondrous words of adventure and tall tales, and he says, "yeah.  i guess so."

with a grin jonghyun tosses a used napkin into the nearby wastebasket, swish, and turns to jinki.  "so what do you wanna do next?"

"me?" jinki laughs.  "i thought you had it all planned out."

"well i do," jonghyun smirks and jinki tells himself that it'd be a waste of money and effort on kibum's behalf if he chucked his drink at the smug grin, "but i just wanna hear what you want to do."

"so that means no matter what i say, we're not gonna go with my idea."

"you never know.  they could match up.  we could be closer than you think."  he adds some weird eyebrow wiggling.

jinki takes a moment and, really, jonghyun's right-they are that close and jinki can tell just from the impatient jiggling of his legs that jonghyun really really really has something he wants to do (or just wants to go to the bathroom and is waiting for him to say something).  and that something jonghyun wants to do is none other than the something he doesn't want to do.

but still, jinki thinks, jonghyun's right.

"ice skating," he finally says, and jonghyun's face goes so bright.

"good!" jonghyun smacks him on the thigh.  "now, i gotta go to the bathroom, have to piss so bad."

jinki laughs to himself as kibum leaps over the counter and locks the bathroom door with his keys before jonghyun even realizes what a "fucking cunt move" that is.

jinki's never felt so unstable in his life.

no, that's a lie.  that one time jonghyun "accidentally" gave him some beer and convinced him to balance on the white brick wall separating their houses-that, that was bad.

but even with jonghyun's arm around his waist and one hand clutched onto the metal railing of the rink, jinki feels like somehow his legs will fail him and collapse under him and send him flying onto the ice.  jonghyun must've sensed it because he starts to tug and pull and push and laugh as jinki shrieks with every involuntary swivel of his hips.

"you fucker!" jinki yells as jonghyun detaches himself and easily breezes to the other side of the rink.  moms glare at him but god, he could've died right there.  "kim jonghyun, get-i said get over-whoa-"

it must be fate, his face smacking the cold ridged ice of the rink.  jinki groans and somewhere far along the icy expanse jonghyun howls to the sky.  he struggles up to his knees, wipes his cheek with the back of his hand, and glowers at jonghyun when he glides over until the blades of his skates are just a mere centimeters from his outstretched fingertips.

"you are just too funny," jonghyun chimes as he leans down to help jinki up.

an opportunity.

sure, it might be childish, jinki thinks in the brief second he has before he executes his revenge, but then, so are they, on the inside at least.

jonghyun comes down with his eyes wide and mouth gaping, right onto jinki's left.  jinki laughs, the tingling spreading from head to toe and waking his numb limbs.

"you little-" jonghyun starts but he doesn't get to finish it as jinki scrambles over him and back onto his feet and, by some miraculous wonder, dashes madly down the rink to the opposite side.  of course, he's clueless once his body slams into the railing for the manual break, because jonghyun looks like a mad bull ready for the kill, and his legs suddenly don't know how to move.  (which is funny, because his whole childhood's been full of him running away, and he's the co-captain of the track long distance team; and it's even more ironic now that jonghyun's the one who's chasing him, not saving him.)  "lee jinki, i'm gonna kill you."

jinki tries his hardest, really, he does, but he ends up going in the wrong direction and right smack into a young couple, their children, and the metal stroller thing the kids were using to make their way across.  he does an incredible flip, right into jonghyun's crushing arms.

this, jinki thinks, is not how he imagined their first real hug to be.

"i am going to end you," jonghyun whispers lowly.

jinki finds those words oddly familiar.

but instead of further threatening him, jonghyun does something weird-weird, but nice.  very nice, actually-something weird that jinki wasn't really expecting to happen.  the shorter boy digs the front of the blades of his shoes in the ice, pushes up until they're almost eye level, and kisses him square on the mouth.  it's rough, what with jonghyun's tongue down his throat and his teeth desperately biting at everything soft and pliable within his reach.  jinki thinks he shouldn't really be moaning like this when, from the corner of his eye, he can see the family almost ready to take the turn around the rink so that they're completely open to the on-ice molestation going on, but he's done a lot of things he shouldn't have done today.  so, jinki just shrugs, waits half a second, then punches jonghyun in the stomach to push him away.

he points at the incoming family when jonghyun gives him a nasty glare, and immediately the two flee the rink, drop off the skates at the rental, and run all the way home (whose home it is, doesn't really matter, they just need to there, fast).

jonghyun's bed is a lot more comfortable than jinki had remembered it to be.  but he doesn't have too much time to revel in the softness of the mattress or the scent coming from the pillow once jonghyun has jinki's shirt hiked up and pants yanked down.

too quick, too quick, as jonghyun touches him everywhere, and jinki moans, shamelessly.  he does so without regret, as usual when it comes to this brat (but can he even call him a brat anymore?).  they sweat and pant and groan against each other, together, and during the frenzied, awkward, all-too-new rustling and grinding, jinki opens his eyes and hears jonghyun say something really embarrassing in his ear and stares up at the blank wall and wonders how the fuck he got here.

but he screws them back shut when he sees white hot flashes burst behind his eyes, when he sees jonghyun shudder helplessly and weakly in his arms, when he sees just how stupid and in love he is with this loser, this madman, this everything that sort of completes him.

jonghyun brushes his damp fingertips along jinki's cheekbones with a heavy sigh.  "hey, jinki," he murmurs softly into his pillow, one eye closed, one eye open on the squirming, red-faced boy who tries his best to cover himself up with the limited amount of blanket he has.  jonghyun tugs again and jinki squawks.  "you realize if we played by the rules right now we'd be in chem?"

"you mean, my favorite class?"

jonghyun rolls his eyes and jinki grins.

"that was fun," jinki finally says and he closes one hand over jonghyun's, "we should do that again."

there's a moment of silence before jonghyun rolls onto his back and barks into the dark room.  "you are just something."

jinki smiles.  he thinks the words he just said over again in his head to see if he hadn't just put himself in another round of some dangerous school adventures.  he concludes that, with a guy like jonghyun, that's sort of inevitable, so he shimmies on closer and presses a soft kiss to jonghyun's shoulder.

they grin at each other stupidly before jonghyun announces that "i'm hungry, i'm gonna make some pancakes" and stomps down to his kitchen, half naked in only his boxers.

he appears at the door again with a puppy dog look as if asking aren't you gonna come with? and jinki, despite his weak legs, rolls off the slightly damp sheets and walks with jonghyun in the sixty-degree house to the kitchen to make some blueberry pancakes.

(which they end up setting on flames and chucking out the window into the newly fallen snow.  jinki hasn't laughed that hard in a while.)

jinki stares at the blinking number on his cell.  ten fifteen in the morning and the kid has the balls to call.  he picks up the phone.

"what, jonghyun."

"hey," starts the usual response, "i'm skipping school today."

jinki opens his mouth to ask "what's your excuse?", stops, checks the calendar, and then says, "it's sunday, jonghyun."

there's a prolonged silence from the other end, and jinki's lips curl.  "would you like to hang out today? would be your alternative."

"uh.  sure."

the line goes dead and jinki swears he hears some cursing from the window just a good ten feet from his own, and he laughs.

point one for him.
