a/n: inspired by the bird that flew into my house yesterday.

Jinki comes home with the brightest of bright smiles on his face, lips stretched and eyes glinting to provide a source of light better than the fluorescent bulbs that Kibum had forced Jonghyun to install the other day.  He also comes home with a huge contraption hugged to his chest, a thick canvas draped over to reveal the dome-ish shape of it.

"What is that?" Kibum demands the second his eyes are on it, almond eyes scrutinizing, suddenly wide as horror spreads his face.  "You didn't."

"But I did!" the older singer chirps along with the muffled tweets from underneath the covers.  But his ever-stunning smile falls when he realizes that Kibum's face is still frozen in disgust.

Kibum drops the dirtied rag in his hand onto the ground, and as a wail crawls up his throat, Taemin stumbles into the living room, the usual "What, what, what?" loop playing from his smiling eyes.

The singer takes it as a cue to throw the canvas off, and he watches Taemin's hands automatically shoot for the golden cage and Kibum's body slump to the floor in utter defeat.

"I don't understand," Jonghyun starts as he shoves another cracker into his mouth, the other one in his hand waving, tantalizingly slowly in front of the cage.  "Why are you so against this?"

The rapper barks from the opposite side of the living room-"Hey, you know, you're blocking the tv"-with arms crossed over his chest, "We won't be able to sleep at all with that thing.  At all, Kim Jonghyun."  He wrings his hands for effect.

"Bull."  The brunet rips open a new sleeve, earning a condescending look in return.  "They're just crackers, we'll burn them off later."

Naturally, Kibum's eyes are slits again as he takes one step to the right, revealing a rerun of Star Golden Bell.  "I hope you choke on those."

Jonghyun flashes a quick grin and a laugh twinkles in the air, but it's cut short by gags and desperate "W-water!"s.  Kibum isn't there to listen, though, as he grumpily slinks out of the living room and into the kitchen.

When they gather for dinner, dinner that Kibum had refused to make, Minho finds himself in an odd position.  One hand is wrapped tightly around Taemin's wrist as the boy ardently tries to crawl out of his seat to play with the parrot (though sometimes Taemin's sneaky, slips his entire arm out of the sweater, and then Minho has to use both arms to keep him strapped, "Geez, Taemin, what are you?  Five?"  "Six."), and his eyes are on Kibum, his arched back, and untouched food.  Jinki and Jonghyun talk happily about the parrot-they wanted to name it Taehee, but Kibum refused-and fork down their defrosted meals with much ardor.

But after five minutes of clamoring and odd silence, Minho gives up.  He lets go of Taemin, sending the boy reeling forward, and finally sets his eyes on the cold dinner before him.  Shaking his head, he grabs a glass of water, gulps it down in one go, and sighs heavily.  "I'm going to sleep," he declares to no one in particular, but he hears a wary "Good night" anyway.

Kibum wishes the ceiling above him would just fall and knock him out, but he isn't so lucky as Taemin coos in his sleep, something about tail feathers and rainbows.  Hands rub furiously at his stinging eyes, and he sighs in exhaustion.  Even after shirking his duties for the whole day, the raven felt horrible.

With a small grunt, he pushes his legs off the bed so they ominously drape over Jinki's sleeping face, and he spits, "I hate you."

He makes his way to the living room where the beast sleeps, its heavy chest rising and falling to each silent breath.  Kibum clenches his fists.

And then he drops in front of the cage, elevated by the small coffee table in front of the couch, and he puts on a dry smile.  "What does he see in creatures like you?"  The parrot rustles about and Kibum reels back into the television, eyes wide.  "Oh shit."

The bird squawks.  Kibum flinches.

After seconds of silent staring, Kibum gives in and pokes a finger through an opening of the cage.  The bird stares quizzically at it, its wide, yellow beak prodding at the digit, and the raven mumbles, "You're pretty."  He thinks he hears the bird purr in response, but he thinks it a bit too weird and shrugs it off.  "Lucky you, having these soft feathers to touch.  Maybe that's why."  His face hardens, a frown in place.

It squawks again, this time a bit softer than the last, and it sings, "Bwaack, I love you."

Kibum's eyebrows shoot up in disbelief, and he giggles, "What?"

"Bwaack, I love you."  Kibum doesn't know why he suddenly feels giddy but his strokes the bird's feathers with two fingers, three, and then a clumsy hand unlatches the hook.  The bird promptly hops onto his extended arm, and Kibum smiles.

"Who taught you how to say that, huh?" he laughs as the wings flutter about, slapping him lightly in the face.

It cocks its head to the left.  "Jinki.  Jinki did, bwaack."  Clucking its tongue and snapping its beak, the parrot bounces.  "Jinki loves Kibummie.  Jinki loves Kibummie."

His eyes widen a fraction before he buries his face in the parrot's soft feathers, the vibrant orange-red matching his cheeks.  The labored laughter that escapes his lips disturbs the groomed layer of green and blue, but the bird doesn't mind as it continues, "Love, bwaack.  Jinki loves Kibum."  Tears of laughter slip through the small cracks of the feathers as he continues to chuckle softly to himself, the parrot's soft chatter playing as music to his ears.

"Bwaack, Jonghyun loves Shin Sekyung."

Kibum rolls his eyes and spreads himself out on the couch, one arm crossed over his chest so he can stare at the bird straight in the eye.  "Don't disturb me, all right?"

"All right," it sings in reply, and Kibum slips on a wide smile.

Jinki walks into the kitchen, eyes puffy and red, and as he fixes his glasses for the umpteenth time, he trips over several rags and cardboard boxes.  "What-"  He stops himself when his eyes land on Kibum's sleeping face, and the mess of color resting soundly on his chest.  Beady eyes meet his and with a cocked head, the parrot blares aloud, "Shh, don't disturb, don't disturb."

He smiles.  "You better not be stealing him from me, Taehee-yah."

Kibum's eyes suddenly snap open and he glares, "I thought I told you-"

"Good morning!" the singer squeaks and then his grasps the bewildered parrot, runs for the kitchen to avoid a suddenly aerial pillow aimed for his head.  Kibum sighs roughly, hands running through his messy hair, and he barely smiles, quietly chuckles as he hears distant "Hold on-Taehee-yah, don't touch the coffee!"

As long as Jinki pays for the extra mouth to feed.

am i the only one imagining minho having secret conversations with the parrot, and jonghyun singing with it?
