The artist probably painted the place more idyllic than it was in real life. And getting a visit from the grand duke probably meant the children were dressed in their finest. But I do think it was a good institution, where orphan and illegitimate children got proper care and education, which in turn gave them a profession and a future. And it really is a lovely building, still the pride of Florence. I agree that modern institutions could pick up a thing or two from their Renaissance equivalent...!

That hat is rather fun, isn't it!
I am delighted to see that all the children seem clean, well fed, and properly clad. One could wish the same for modern institutions!
