To me, Caro mio Ben - at it's best (I'm not talking college freshman juries slapped together in a week, I'm talking great bel canto singers of a bygone era.) the most simple and concise expression of the glory of Italian Song and the human voice. Sung really well, it can make you weep like the end of Traviata or Boheme.
I really want to do an intense schubert set of Erlkoenig, Gretchen, and Der Zwerg - but Im not sure I (or the audience) has the emotional stamina)
I've never been moved to that extent by Caro mio Ben, but I certainly find its simplicity beautiful. It upsets me when I hear the 24 Italian Songs and Arias dripping with excessive ornamentation because I find them more affecting when the singers trust the music and the emotion.
That would be a fucking amazing Schubert set, but your pianist might have no fingers left by the end of it. I love Der Zwerg, it's so haunting. When I was little I had a video of animated arias, and I always thought that Der Zwerg would suit animation. Oils on glass, particularly.
Yes it totally would! when i sing it I picture the trolls and the bill goats (yah, im strange) and all sorts of weird fairy tale imagry. Id love to do a music video of it.
