Nokia, nokia, nokia! Look into getting yourself something from the E series. They have excellent reviews and are subsequently quite hard to find second hand through places like ebay as no one wants to part with them after using them for a little while. Have a look!
(Personally, I've been using the same Nokia 8250 for the last five years. The only time I thought I had a problem with it, it turned out the phone was fine and my battery charger had a chewed-up cord :) )
Personally I'm a big fan of Samsung phones. I've never had a problem with one. The only reason I've ever replaced one was to get an upgraded Samsung the next time I signed the contract. I'm with T-Mobile, but I think Verizon has some Samsung phones as well.
