As any good Alias fan knows, Jenny was not just an assistant.
She was also pretty good in bed. Or so we should assume.
No eye rolling please, Will never looked like he was complaining. In fact, sleeping with your twenty year old intern is probably just wrong enough for a good guy like Will. Maybe at that point in his life, he needed a hot young girl to make him feel like a man while his best friend was going for the helpful handler and he was getting in over his head with knowledge of SD-6.
But my character discussion is on Jenny, isn't it?
To accurately discuss her role in Alias, I am going to have to frequently refer to Will, because let's face it, he is the reason why she exists. Behind every great reporter, there should be someone reminding him to get a tuxedo for his awards ceremony, right?
For Will, that someone was Jenny. And although many people will write her off as just a casual fling he had when things with Sydney didn't go as planned, she really was a lot more for him. However, there is a difference between being more 'to' him and being more 'for' him, and this is what led to the downfall of their may/september sexcapades.
Yes, I really do think there was sex in the copy room, but to be fair, there was a lot more than that.
When we are introduced to Jenny (an intern at the Register), its clear that she's younger than the rest of the people around her. Her clothing, attitude, choice of words, and inability to understand older pop culture references (note for amusement: Will tells her that he looked like Gabe Kaplan, and then wins the Kaplan award) tell us that. But there is a difference between being limited in maturity because of your age, and being a ditzy assistant.
Often when we see Jenny, she's pointing out to Will of things that he's unaware of. The way he sounds when talking to Sydney, work that needs to be done, possible ideas for his investigation of SD-6, and of course, the aforementioned awards ceremony. Jenny is very good at what she does. She's not old enough to be concerned with professionalism, and not young enough to miss the writing when its on the wall about whatever they have going. However, to be fair to Will, Jenny understood what she was getting herself into before they got up close and personal. Early on, she asks Will if he takes her seriously and he admits that he doesn't. And Will isn't alone in that boat, many Alias fans didn't take her seriously either.
I, on the other hand, think that Jenny deserves a little respect. After all, the girl does what she can. She seems to be an intern who does her job well, even though she does flirt with Will. She is well mannered, and will not accept an "implicit" please. She brings cider to Thanksgiving dinner, and thanks Sydney for letting her "crash" their party. She shows up to rescue Will when he needs her--and later leaves him on the side of the road.
But come on, if you thought you were in a relationship with someone, and they chose that moment to break up with you, you'd get a little annoyed too.
Jenny is a human being. Her excessive use of the word "totally" and spur of the moment decision to give Will tongue at the turkey table doesn't change that. Sure, she's not around for very long, but she isn't a character who was built for longevity. In a show like Alias, having a Jenny can give us a much needed breath of fresh air in between spy!scenes and family!angst. She's the normal girl who stands out in an abnormal world, searching for someone who will take her seriously. If you think about it, Will's inability to do that was his loss.
After all, Jenny was pretty hot.
