In the City, you can return someone else's life to them if you make a trade with the Deities. Usually it's a life for a life, but I've heard they can also accept other things... Something like 'equivalent exchange' you could say, as perceived by them.

Edward found a way to give me back my life without giving up his own. I... I wish he hadn't. I was still sick, after all, so I simply ended up dying again.
