You have every right to be upset. It's your departing roommate's job to clean the room that he/she occupied.

I'm sorry you had to do that. :(

That's what I thought! Well, at least he's gone. Good riddance!

It is always best to be in the position of leaving rather than staying because of this very circumstance.

One hopes that your roomate made some deposit which you may keep a portion of so that everything is square. That is why deposits are made, it prevents too much resentment over things like this.

Because people being people will be lazy or disctracted or both and not clean things up as they should.

Therefore, I would recommend avoiding the fury and focussing on the practical. I mean, tally up how much work (as in $$) it took to clean up the mess. Then deduct.

I fucked up and gave him back his deposit earlier because he said he needed to make his deposit on the new place that day and I was trying to be understanding, naively assuming that the room would be fine since it was perfect before, so I'll either have to make him cut me a check or take it out of his hide. The latter sounds more fulfilling at this point.

Well, he has to come by because he "says" he'll replace the overhead light-fixture, which he broke, so maybe I will just tally up the whole total instead. I gave up my leverage though, I feel so stupid. I have far to much faith in people and they never seem to deserve it.

I would say you have the right to be annoyed with everything, but the black scuff marks from the furniture on the walls, only because that is a normal wear and tear in any apartment, I have left that everywhere I have ever lived. Other than that, I would be pissed and you might tell future tenants that they can't hang things on the walls with anything other than picute nails, which are really small. The closet door thing was ridculous, as was the wax.

True true. I'll slap some paint on 'em and it should be fine, I just got a bit overly worked up since I was pissed at having to do his dirty work. The picture nail advice is definitely good - no more screws, that's ridiculous! And I'll cross the closet door bridge when I get to it, he might like it that way? The previous past roommates did, but he put the doors back before moving out.
