thank God for Ron Howard. i've had it with bleak, ironic, heartless movies with nebulous endings. i get enough of that in real life, seeing as the entire youth movement seems to be predicated on trying really, really hard to look like they're not caring and basically rejecting every tenet of human decency. yeah, i said it. bring it, you bunch ( Read more... )

so the movie was good. . .?

I have my doubts about it cause it seems too stereotypical. Handsome underdog returns to the ring to save his family. I'm also tiring of boxing. Its not a sport I like to begin with, but it seems to be the latest craze in entertainment. From Million Dollar Baby to the Contender to several other movies, and now Cinderella Man (which is a TERRIBLE title btw). Shrug. Perhaps it will be like Seabiscuit and surprise me (i liked that movie a lot).

meanwhile, have you seen Closer? GASP! OMG, amazing. and also CRASH. GASP! doubly amazing!

well...i don't think you should go by me. i like pretty much every sports film ever made, and the more heartwarming and melodramatic, the better. for this reason, i despised million-dollar baby and made MANY loud grumbling sounds from my seat when forced to endure it. BOO. sports movies go like this: underdog embarks upon unlikely winning streak. finally makes it to big fight/game expected to go down in the first round/inning/half/quarter. starts off strong. gets pummeled. finds inner strength in defeat to come back for last hurrah, beating the crap out of condescending/megalomaniacal/psychopathic/communist opponent. everybody goes home happy, especially me.

here's why: life is depressing a lot of the time. i need to believe in the possibility of a happy ending. :)
i have great faith in your taste in films, however, and will add both of your recommendations to my list.
