I have been shaking for over an hour. In a matter of minutes I have lost over 40 French books to mold. My entire collection, except 2 books on different shelves and one I lent to my sister a while back. Gone. Many old and out of print. Gone ( Read more... )

I sometimes lay awake at night deciding what I would want to take with me if my home were being consumed in flames. Aside from the obvious one of getting myself and my cat outside, I also consider grabbing a few of my most precious books. They are more valuable to me than my electronics or my jewelry or my crystals. Books are like friends to me.

I am so sorry that you've lost forty of your friends. If you want, get me a list and I can contact my uncle at the Strand in NYC. French isn't his department, but he quite probably has some phenomenal connections that can help you rebuild some of your collection, perhaps for cheaper than if you tried to do it on your own.

And of course my microwave is at your disposal if you want to try Lyon's suggestion.

*hugs* Hope you had a good Thanksgiving, regardless.

i'm so sorry. if yall have renter's insurance, you may be able to claim under that, though sometimes there are mold exclusions. and if i can help yall find replacements, i will.

*hugs*

After working in insurance, there's no way I'd file a claim for anything thats under $500. Even if you just call to find out what would happen if you file a claim, they often count it as a "0 paid out loss" and it goes on your record. If you try to get new insurance you can be denied for previous losses. J suggested the same thing actually and the damage isnt very extensive- so we'd file the claim, pay for all the damage ourselves since its below our deductible and then it would go on our record. Might as well cut out the middleman and just pay for it.

UT's iSchool has one of the top conservation programs in the country. Maybe they could help you save some of your books, especially the really old/rare ones.
