I guess it really comes down to one thing: Can you afford to work for no pay through the entire summer?
If you can, then I say go for it. If it's within your means to do so, it really sounds like too good a thing to pass up. If you can't manage without a paying job, however, you might need to look at other options. Even if it's a 1/2 volunteer stint, 1/2 paid job stint; if that's even in the realm of possibilities.
I say take the volunteer job and like save up what you can now, though I know that's tough with still being up there. I agree with the previous comment about the half volunteer/half pay thing.
