I need a new PC, because apparently my graphics card isn't good enough to run SimCity Societies. I would be less pissed off by this if I didn't spend an extra hour downloading a 200mb patch so I could make it run enough to tell me my graphics card wasn't good enough ( Read more... )

Last fall I bought an HP from Circuit City for my husband with almost these specs. It was only a few hundred dollars.

* Intel quad core (at least 2.4Ghz, probably more like 2.8)
Quad core is overkill, I suggest one of the E8*00 series. The 2.66ghz one is about 200, the 3ghz is 240ish. Defiantly go with Intel though, AMD is crap at the moment.
You want a motherboard that supports 1333mhz front side bus, so something like the ASUS P5KPL, LGA775.

* nVidia GeForce 8800GT/9600GT (both of these look great, I'm just undecided which one I want)
I say 9600gt.

* At least 500GB HDD (Ideally 1TB)
2 500gb drives? 500 seems to be the current sweet spot.

* Dvd-r/rw drive (no bluray necessary)
* 2 or 3gb RAM
May as well go for 4gb, 3 is hard to do and 2 will be too little in a year or two.

I'm happy to build it.

Oh yeah, stock cooling is fine unless your planning to overclock it.

Thanks heaps for the advice! I was looking at either the E8400 or Q6700 - as far as the processor goes, I don't want it to date too quickly ( ... )

Looks fine.
You won't need a network card (unless it's wireless) as the motherboard comes with one.
Spend some time digging around on www.staticice.com.au . It allows you to compare lots of prices easily.
You should be able to use the IDE and SATA drives together. I would still consider getting 2 500gb, you can probably get them for the same as the 750gb. Hard disk prices are weird.
