OK, something I just did deposited a trojan horse on my computer. Be careful, because I am pretty sure the culprit was a link I clicked on somebody else's LJ ( Read more... )

I'm not sure what version you're using, but you can often "restart in safe mode" which will eliminate the "being used by another process" thing. You could also hit ctrl-alt-delete and maybe have a chance to kill the other process.

Google the name of the virus and "removal instructions" or something like that. Some places post very clear steps.

I actually think I managed to fix it, somehow, although I'm still wary. Instead of going to bed like I said I was going to, I dug around in the Help section of my virus software and found some instructions about turning off the system restore, restarting the computer, re-running the scan to find the trojan again, and deleting the file. I did the first two steps, but when I re-ran the scan, it said I didn't have any viruses. Weird.
