Boyd can see the blues and purples under the dust. The lid on his friend’s eye is swollen, even behind the safety goggles, and Boyd can remember echoes of the pain from a fist years before.
The bruise is new; they were at Laurie’s last night, and Raylan’s face had been free from a shiner. In fact, they’d graduated from the bourbon to a bottle of shine, parked out back in the woods. He’d tilted back Raylan’s face with a hand, and his hair had tangled in Boyd’s fingers as he’d pressed Raylan flat in the bed of the truck.
The shine had spilled from a misplaced knee as he’d gnawed lust onto a collarbone, and they’d decided to head home for the night, and he remembered Raylan’s face, tired and streaked with dust in the porch light. It had been clean of markings, and as Boyd had pulled his truck away, he’d heard the shouting inside the house.
For a moment, Boyd looks away from his friend. He forces his eyes back, staring at Raylan. The other boy has the makings of a stare, and even through the bruise, he gets caught up in the man’s gaze.
