what do people use to rip cds to mp3?

i was going to buy winamp pro today,  but the site errored trying to buy it.

also, what do people use to convert video files to wmv?

I use iTunes, it's free and it works well.

yea ive been trying to avoid itunes, but it looks like i might have to break down and use it. thanks.

You should use something that can do good mp3 encoding, you can defintely hear the difference at the same bitrate. LAME mp3 encoder is generally considered the best one. It is a fairly complex encoder and has a lot of options though, so you have to know how to tweak it but it's worth that.
