Title: Is there Life on Mars?
Fandom: Life on Mars
Rating: Green Cortina
Warning: Spoilers for the last episode
Characters: Sam
Disclaimer: I own nothing however, I did put a bid in for the Cortina but they wouldn't accept 50p.
Summary: What was going through Sam's mind on the roof

My half of the challenge with Made_in_ink to write a fic based on Sam's thoughts in the last episode.

The Blue was brighter than anything he’d seen in 1973, but at the same time he’d never seen anything as bleak as the never ending sky around him.
He hadn’t felt it.
Everything beneath him seemed to have no colour, just a never ending secession of black and white and that space in-between.
Gene in-between. Neither right, nor wrong, but he got results.
Not the committees that sat in glass boxes beneath his feet, who’d never catch a criminal if they walked into reception and handed themselves in.
He hadn’t felt a thing. Could have been the tumour.
He hadn’t caught a single bad guy since he woke up, almost like he was still asleep.
Whisky tasted better with a brain tumour, kisses would taste as sweet.
He hadn’t felt a thing.

The first step was Annie. That he was sure about.
The second step was Gene.
The third was Ray, the forth was Chris.
As much as he hated it, Phyllis was five
Nelson was a six, resounding against the concrete, just another step.

He lost count, who every step was for and why they got faster as they went. Why every step. He knew every step, every step had a meaning, every thought had a meaning, every drink, every bad guy, every word, every thought, every person, every step, every drink, bad guy, word, missed kiss, thrown punch, gunshot, every breath.

Every breath.

Every breath. Had a meaning.

Bent knees, a leap into a childhood pool, not knowing where the bottom lay.

Every breath had a meaning.

The Blue was brighter than anything he’d seen in 1973, but at the same time he’d never seen anything as bleak as the never ending sky around him. Everything beneath him seemed to have no colour, just a never ending secession of black and white and that space in-between.

He hadn’t felt a thing.

The leap head first was Annie. That he was sure about.
The second the air rushing past hit his face was Gene.
The third window he passed was Ray, the forth scream was Chris.
As much as he hated it, Phyllis was five moments away
Nelson was six, as he closed his eyes inches from the ground.

Just another step.
