This isn't a regular homework, you get those in class, but rather a project, and consists of two parts.

That still sounds more like an assignment or homework as opposed to a project since projects are usually more hands on and building things.

I called it project because most of you will take a long time to do it (or, rather, you received the instructions now and most of you will turn it in on the last day of October). The word "project" is defined as "A planned endeavor, usually with a specific goal and accomplished in several steps or stages"; as you can see, there is no mention of hands-on activity.

Assignment: a specified task or amount of work assigned or undertaken as if assigned by authority

Project: a planned undertaking: as a : a definitely formulated piece of research b : a large usually government-supported undertaking c : a task or problem engaged in usually by a group of students to supplement and apply classroom studies

I still think assignment works better. Actually, I'd say paper or essay would as well.

Which one of us is the teacher, here? ♥ Obviously, it just depends on your dictionary. And I did use the word "essay", as you may note. I also never said assignment would not work as a word, specifically; I merely called it a project to set it apart from the short-term assignments that are due soon. But whatever. Call it an assignment if that makes you feel better. ♥
