Kangin had never been so scared in his life.
He didn't remember driving to the hospital. Everything from the phonecall up to bursting through the doors into the stark white entryway was a panic-filled blur, punctuated by the frantic beating of his heart.
He didn't even remember what happened to the car. He left it somewhere, surely, but the only thing that reminded him how he'd gotten there in the first place was the stabbing of the key in his pocket with every anxious step. The moment he entered the hospital, everything else ceased to matter.
Everything but him.
He ran breathlessly, desperately, through the muted beige halls. Manager-hyung had given him the room number; there was no need to stop at the desk, then. He heard at least one shout from somewhere behind him but he was too far gone to listen. He was running, running, the elevator too slow as he raced up the stairs, four flights blurring by before he was finally forced to a stop.
The door was closed, for privacy. Kangin stopped in front of it, hand shaking as he reached for the handle. It seemed to almost swing open by itself. He held his breath as the open doorway gradually revealed the small room: a window with the blinds drawn, the foot of a pristinely white bed.
He stood, petrified, at the threshold, suddenly afraid of what he was going to find inside. He hesitated. There was a noise from the bed, the friction of bandages against starched sheets.
"Youngwoon?"
The voice was quiet, strained. Hearing his name broke the paralysis, and Kangin took the few steps to the bedside and almost fell to his knees in anguish. The broken, frail-looking man blinking up at him was hardly the Leeteuk that Kangin loved. He could only see glimpses of pale skin between the bandages, and those dark, normally-wide eyes were nearly closed, tears of pain welling up as Kangin gently touched his shoulder.
"I'm here," was all he could say, the words catching in his throat. It was only when he reached to wipe the tears from Leeteuk's cheek, his fingers rubbing against the coarse bandages, that Kangin realized he was crying, too.
