“We’re in Brazil!”
“We’re in Brazil.”
“I can’t believe we’re in Brazil!”
“I can’t believe it either.” The older of the two suppresses a yawn from early morning.
“This is amazing!”
Donghae twirls around, holding onto the edge of the back of the truck. The ride is rocky and he and Eunhyuk are both bumping up and down simultaneously, still soaking in the fact that they’re in Brazil, where they’ve always wanted to be for an adventure of a lifetime. It was boring to simply be in Seoul - they knew the capital like the back of their hands. Donghae dreamt of being in the wild, following the voices of nature, befriending animals there, and living in a little one-man shelter he built himself. But of course, he didn’t know that he would be sharing his adventure with a certain someone until he was fifteen, when Eunhyuk transferred to his high school looking like a dork with his hair parted in the middle wearing batman T-shirts and baggy ripped jeans. Eunhyuk dreamt of travelling the world far and wide searching for the remains of lost ancient civilizations and experience the thrill of life-threatening moments such as exploring a dark cave where no man has seen before or sitting on top of a waterfall with legs dangling on the edge. (Donghae insists that he wouldn’t have the guts to do the latter.)
The man driving the truck was going a tad too fast for Eunhyuk to take pictures and inspect them later and was a tad too noisy for Donghae to hope that a wildlife creature would appear in eyesight. Nonetheless the scenery was phenomenal. The thick rainforest that surrounded them were tall and mighty; almost no sunlight could seep through the blanket of leaves above their heads. The wheels on the truck would snap a branch here and there and if looked closely, insects beneath the dead leaves crawled out in frenzy, looking for a new home the second they leave. Eunhyuk lifted his white wife beater up and down to let the air creep in - the summer of Seoul was nothing compared to this hot, wet, stickiness that clung to his skin. Wearing clothes was such a hassle in midday but was necessary for warmth in the rainy evening.
“Hey, when do we reach a populated area?” Donghae called to the driver, eyes focused on the little poison arrow frog that somehow hopped its way onto the truck. He unzipped his backpack and searched for something to trap it, grinning in delight when he found an empty plastic jar supposedly for catching the rain to drink after boiling it with the flint stone that Eunhyuk brought.
“Soon, soon,” a husky voice replied, followed by a suspicious snicker, but neither Eunhyuk nor Donghae questioned it. Eunhyuk watched as Donghae slammed the jar down at the frog, trapping it as it leaped in alarm. Donghae spent the next half an hour marveling at it until the truck came to a halt and he found a salamander with the “prettiest blue eyes he had ever seen.” Of course, he picks it up by the tail and swings it around.
Eunhyuk hopped off, landing perfectly on his feet and holding onto his backpack tightly. He looked around expecting to see a camp for him and his best friend to stay at for the rest of their trip in the Amazon Rainforest; but to his dismay, there were only more of the forest and a thick overgrown dead-end of plants and trees a truck could not possible go through without getting stuck. He arched an eyebrow, silently telling Donghae with his eyes to get off the truck too.
“Uhm…dude, where are we?”
Suddenly the truck turns around and drives right across a mud puddle, splashing it onto the two of them (a patch of mud hits Eunhyuk’s hair and he is pissed.) The man sticks out his arm holding their wallets and cackles manically. “Who told you to ever trust me? SO LONG, SUCKERS. AHAHAHAHAHA. Don’t let the tribes here stab you with a spear!” Donghae stares after the truck and there’s a pregnant silence between them, excluding the screeches of the howler monkeys. Eunhyuk is still mad about his hair.
“Ah…my backpack was still on that truck.”
“ARGHHHHHHHHH!”
“Forgetting my credit cards at home was a good thing!”
“THIS IS NOT HOW OUR ADVENTURE IS SUPPOSED TO START.”
“But we have your backpack, right? That was where we put the first aid kit and water and stuff in!”
It’s only an hour later that Donghae realizes how dire their situation is. So while Donghae is screaming for help at the top of his lungs, Eunhyuk is rolling up a ball of tissue and hitting the flint stones together in hopes of creating sparks, leading to a fire for the day. Some of it catches onto the tissue and he hurriedly takes it in his hands, blowing into the tissue and praying. Donghae helps collect branches and makes a pile out of it next to the dead end. The other is excited when red starts appearing and engulfs the tissue because wow, okay, this is Eunhyuk’s first time making a fire in a rainforest. Fire flickers in his hands and he runs to the pile, dropping it down and flailing his hands in the air from the heat.
“We have fire! Quick, get the water, I want to boil it,” Donghae beams. Eunhyuk celebrates; the mud in his hair is insignificant and they boil the water from a water bottle, just because they can. Their happiness is short lived however, as the fire quickly spreads to the plants which burned a vine wrapped around a tree that resulted in the tree catching fire which ended up as a big wall of flame.
“OH MY GOD, DO SOMETHING,” Donghae pulls on his hair.
“Well, if we look on the bright side, Donghae,” Eunhyuk begins and takes a step back.
“THERE IS NO BRIGHT SIDE; WE’RE KILLING THE HOME OF MILLIONS OF CREATURES!” Donghae fans the fire with his jacket and screeches when the flames get even bigger. Eunhyuk panics because one, he might die (and he didn’t buy any type of death insurance), two, there wasn’t an answer to his situation when he read the survival guide and three, if he does survive there’s going to be a penalty, isn’t there?
“WHAT THE HELL DO WE DO?” Donghae’s eyes bulge wide open as he stares at the flame that continues to grow.
“WE RUN FOR OUR LIVES!” Eunhyuk screams and grabs Donghae’s hand, pulling him along as he runs.
“Eunhyuk, we’re going to DIE!” Donghae cries while trying to keep up with Eunhyuk. “We can’t outrun the fire!”
Eunhyuk ignores him as they both continue to escape from the rising flames. After what seems like an eternity, Eunhyuk leads Donghae through a narrow path in the forest and they continue to run. Donghae trips over a small rock in the ground and slips on the sandy floor, but Eunhyuk reaches out and grabs him before he is about to fall. They both pretend nothing happened and Donghae follows Eunhyuk until the trees open up and present a wide open area of dead grass.
There are torn white tents placed up every few feet, some with black marks that looked like burns. To the right of the tents stands a small wooden shelter. A trail of smoke escapes the cracks in the roof and Eunhyuk is envious. Whoever made that fire succeeded and what did he do? He burned up probably a third of the forest.
“Eunhyuk!” Donghae jumps, relieved that they would be able to find help. “There are people here!”
Eunhyuk is still in his dazed state, but snaps out immediately when Donghae sprints to the center of the group of tents. The older one quickly follows the brunette and when he finally catches up, he sees Donghae, standing in front of a tent. Donghae hesitates to open the flap, but Eunhyuk is rushing. He nudges Donghae, and the younger male instantly lifts the flap of the tent and forces a smile on his face.
“H-Hi,” Donghae nervously greets and is welcomed with a spear pointed at his throat.
Eunhyuk steps aside, but when he turns around, there is another spear pointed at him. The red head thinks of a way to explain before their lives meet an end.
“There’s a fire coming!” Eunhyuk blurts out, not thinking it over.
The men pointing the spears both raise an eyebrow in confusion. Eunhyuk takes a moment to study them. Both of the men are wearing deer leather and have their hair grown out longer than usual. Dangling bracelets hang on their wrists and Eunhyuk is pretty sure that the beads are actually animal teeth. His thoughts are washed away once he feels the spear make closer contact with his skin, just barely touching his neck.
“Hyuk!” Donghae calls him. “They don’t speak our language! We have to hurry before the fire comes!”
Eunhyuk tries his best to think, but with a near-death situation like this, it was quite difficult.
“Yaaaah!” one of the men shouts and pushes Donghae until he falls to the ground.
Donghae makes a hard landing with an “oof!” and slides on the sand before the man picks him back up. He lifts the brunette up in the air by the collar of his shirt and brings his spear back, aiming directly at Donghae’s chest. “No!” Eunhyuk screams and struggles to free himself of the other man’s grasp, but it was just too tight. Donghae’s eyes begin to tear up as he focuses his eyes on the sharp point of the weapon. The man brings the deadly object closer to Donghae and is about to pierce his skin with it. However, his actions are stopped when the door to the wooden shelter opens and out steps another man, dressed just like them. This man, though, has a cap of feathers on his head and as his door closes, the tent flaps open and men, women, and children step out. His neck was decorated with tree carvings and a pendent with an unusual symbol. He had an unwelcoming face that spoke the words “Piss me off and you die” written all over it. Everyone bows down except for Eunhyuk, Donghae, and the other two men. “This guy looks freaky,” Donghae thinks to himself, “but at least he saved me from dying.”
Eunhyuk gulped, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. He quickly glanced between Donghae and the man, a bead of sweat dripping down from his forehead.
“E-eu preciso f-fazer xixi!!!” (“I need to pee!!!) Eunhyuk shouts, reciting a Portuguese sentence he learned from a book without really remembering what it means because of sheer panic. “Eu preciso fazer xixi.” Eunhyuk says with more confidence now, tilting his head up a little. The tribe murmurs among each other with the exception of the man in the feathers and pendent. Donghae starts nibbling on his lip as he looks at Eunhyuk. What in the world did his best friend just say?
“EU PRECISO FAZER XIXI!!!” Eunhyuk struggles from the grasp of the men. He feels a powerful surge of pride as he thinks he delivered the message to the tribe. The fire was coming!
Eventually they agree among themselves to let the two strange Asian men go and take care of their business. The spears are loosened from their throats and lowered and is instead being used to point to the bushes.
“Xixi ali.” (“Pee over there.”)
They don’t move from where they are from confusion.
“What?” Donghae asks Eunhyuk, who only shrugs. They cautiously walk over to the bushes and to their surprise they were left alone as everyone simply went back into their tents. “Wait! No! There’s a fire, guys!” At this outburst the man with the feathers blows a horn and everyone rushes out of the tents with buckets of water, dashing off and disappearing in a split second. By the time Eunhyuk and Donghae blink from behind the bushes, they hear hollers from a distance.
“If you guys aren’t going to pee,” the man speaks and they are surprised that they can understand him, “then follow me. Yes, I know Korean.”
The two obediently step out of the bushes and run after the guy, staring at his feathers and how they move in a funny way whenever a breeze comes. Donghae is close to snickering and laughing aloud, but stops immediately when the man glances back at them. He opens the door to the wooden shelter and guides them in. The two eagerly sit down on the floor around his small fire and he offers them both a bowl of some weird green liquid.
“Eat it, you must be hungry,” he says, handing them odd-looking spoons.
Donghae hears his stomach grumble and he begins to sip the soup, or at least that’s what he thinks it is. He smiles delightfully at the pleasant taste.
“This is delicious,” he comments. “What is it?”
“The belly of turtles,” the man with the feathers replies. “It’s seasoned.”
Donghae dashes out the door in just one speedy second and the two can hear gagging and coughing from the outside of the wooden shelter. Eunhyuk laughs softly, feeling sorry for his friend. Donghae returned a minute later, an innocent smile spreading itself wide across his face.
“Continue, sir,” he says politely, blinking a couple of times as if nothing happened out there. Donghae discreetly pushed the bowl away from him and laid the spoon neatly on what seems like the fur of monkeys knitted together.
“I am Chief Alibaba.” (Eunhyuk spits out the soup and excuses himself, laughter in his voice.) “I believe it is my role to have a golden heart and a golden tongue in order to fulfill my position as Hoopao’s chief,” finishing his bowl of…turtle bellies and letting out a disheartened sigh. “We’ve been eating this for three months-!”
“You WHAT?!” Donghae’s eyes bulges. Eunhyuk clears his throat and jabs Donghae on the side, making him squirm and mutter an apology.
“After the war with the neighboring tribe we’ve lost everything. Our population has decreased greatly and the crops aren’t growing. Many have fallen ill. Travel to the modern cities takes too long by walking speed so we can only save a few at a time. I have considered going east to the…forbidden zone.”
“The forbidden zone?” Eunhyuk leaned closer, feeling sympathy for the tribe and a surge of excitement at the bit of information at the end. Could this be the adventure he was looking for?
Chief Alibaba nodded, “Back when I was a young foolish man, my great uncle Zaku was the greatest shaman of all time. Just days before my successor ceremony, he objected the village’s decision to have me as the chief. I was hurt and thought that he did not trust me to bear the responsibility when I have been trained all my life for it. My uncle told me that I should never be possessed by greed and left to the eastern path of the rainforest saying that he needed to take care of something before it feel into the wrong hands. No one ever dared to explore that thick, dark, part of the forest - those who entered never came back to tell the tale.”
They hurdled closer.
“However, I’ve heard stories; stories of the souls of the lost ancient civilization that enchanted and protected the forest. A beautiful and powerful queen by the name of Suldra with icy blue eyes once ruled Nemetati, a rich civilization. During her rule, everything went smoothly until a horrible raid of combined enemies took them off guard. To save her people and ensure them of peace for eternity, she gave up her child, her crown, and her soul. They say that she still lives on, reincarnated as an immortal salamander who lays a golden egg every one hundred years that grants man immortality and one wish if they can find it. The east is rumored to be filled with riches and natural oils. There are more wild creatures there of the most vibrant colors - but also much more dangerous of course. I think great uncle Zaku was after that egg.”
“Did he ever come back?” Donghae pursed his lips.
“Never,” Chief Alibaba shook his head.
“I’m so sorry,” Eunhyuk gave him a pat on the back, which was returned by Chief Alibaba’s arched eyebrow.
“It is getting dark. If you would like to stay and accept our humble little shelter, I shall tell my people that you will be staying for the night and perhaps some more.”
“Yes, please, if we aren’t intruding,” Eunhyuk smiled, flinging his backpack over his shoulder as the three stood up, shaking hands. Being told that they could stay where they were, the two best friends sat around the fire.
“Wasn’t that interesting? A lost civilization! The queen was very brave to sacrifice her three important things like that,” the older took off his shoes.
“Yeah…and filled with riches too. Nature in that forest seems awesome - Eunhyuk, please, did I ever say that you could take off your shoes after days of not taking it off? We are in a closed area! Have you got no decency?” Donghae kicked him away, wrinkling his nose. Man, after years of being with Eunhyuk the odor is still such a big shock. Eunhyuk pushed him back and rolled his eyes but nonetheless put his shoes back on.
“A salamander…OH! HYUK!”
“What?”
“I SAW A SALAMANDER WITH BLUE EYES TODAY.”
“…Your point is?”
“It could’ve been Queen Suldra!”
“Donghae, I am sure that there are many salamanders in the world with blue eyes. Aren’t you supposed to be an expert in this?”
Off in a small corner, a little salamander crawled its way to the exit and looked back with its icy blue eyes. It spun its tail around in a circle quickly, lifting itself up from the ground and into the air. If you’re the only salamander that can fly with your tail, why not use it?
