Forty years ago today, that embarrassment to all Quakers and Irishmen alike, Richard Milhous "Actually, I AM A Crook, But You Can't Prove It! Nyahh!" Nixon, resigned as President.

His hand-picked successor, Warren Commission veteran Gerald Ford, immediately pardoned him. We'll never know what all he did.

Immediately after Ford was sworn in, rumor says that he received a call:

"Pardon me, boy; this is the chap who knew to choose you."

One of the great non sequiturs of his farewell rant was the point where he declared his mother was a saint.

And she probably was a nice person and all, and seems to have spent much of his early life holding the extended family together by force of will, but I recall thinking "And this was what to do with your impending impeachment, bub?"
