Must hold twelve hula hoops (and a pizza)

The Saturn clicked over to 109,000 miles on Saturday. It has been a very faithful car and runs rather well, but it has no air conditioning and the fan that moves the air around is slowing dying. That makes any trip made in weather warmer than oh, say 75 degrees, pretty darn uncomfortable ( Read more... )

Were not for the price, a Prius would be my first choice. Excellent cars. I forgot to note in my original post that I know two other people who were early adopters of the Prius and they both love, love, LOVE 'em.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to get mine (used) *right* before their popularity shot through the roof! I'm still startled any time I realize I've had it six years already.

Lots of my friends are getting Subarooz. However my 2000 golf is still (knockknock) going strong at 110k. Usually these folks are also considering the 3.

I totally envy you and your VW! Excellent German engineering. One of my post-college roommates had a Rabbit and there was *nothing* that could kill that car. :-)

One downside is that the interior on VWs degrades. Perhaps it is the texas sun, but all the interior plastic rots and degrades, the seats are kinda cheap, etc. Of all the places to cut corners to keep the price down, there could be much worse.

The price on the new rabbit is still as low as when I bought mine (the absolute base model). I'd buy another if I needed to.

Had to go look, and they have gone up a few hundred from 8 years ago. Er, 9.

You might check out the Nissan Versa - small, inexpensive, and fairly impressive cargo capacity.

Or there's the VW's. I'm always amazed at what fits into my '97 Golf. Like a 6' ladder. I mean... how? But it went in.

I once got a set of bookcases into my old VW bug. There's a surprising amount of space in those things.

I know you *yawn* at Hondas . . . but as much as I love my Element, I'm quite covetous of my friend's Honda Fit. It gets ridiculously good gas milage, has a decent amount of pick up (except with the AC on), and you can fit a lot of hoops and other misc crap in it.

If I had to buy another car, it would probably be a Fit.
Howdy Honda is awesome, if you go there, ask for Justin. Just go test drive one.

and ps: Elements don't get "horrible" gas mileage! It's not as good as most small economy cars . . . but it's not an economy car, it's considered an SUV, and in the realm of SUVs, it's gas mileage is decent. Biggest complaint: it's like driving a box, in the wind, you blow all over the place.
