“Remember our deal - no one can know.”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t worry. I won’t tell a soul.”

“Good. Because if they knew - if anyone knew -”

“Yes. I know. Now, come one, it’s this way.”

Two men crossed the street. One seemed nervous, checking over his shoulder to make sure he wasn’t being followed, while the other led the way with a sure step, as if he had been here before.

“You know, if anyone found out, people might think you’re changing allegiances.” The shorter of the two said, smirking at his friend.

“Shut up! You know why I’m doing this.” The friend bristled, looking affronted.

“Don’t worry. He’s a benevolent soul. He accepts all pilgrimages and blesses all who visit him.”

“You’re an annoying piece of shit when you want to.” He glared.

“I know. But you like me. So hush. We’re almost there.”

“Ugh. I shouldn’t have asked you this, I don’t know what possessed me.”

“You were drunk. We passed you in the standings. You’re desperate.” He goaded.

“You’re having way too much fun with this.”

“Oh I am. It’s not every day that the high and mighty come to visit us usual bottom feeders.”

“Fuck off. Remember who came in the middle of your streak.”

“I do, actually. As I recall, you found your night of celebration with me quite to your liking and asked for more.”

The friend stepped closer and shoved the other man in the shoulder.

“Let’s just get this over with. This is a sacrifice I am doing for the greater good of my team. I will be thanked for this later. I will be a hero.”

“Okay hero boy. Here we are. Now, go stand next to Gretzky and you will be blessed.”

Edward pushed Étienne towards the statue of Wayne Gretzky hoisting the Stanley cup over his head. Étienne reluctantly walked over and sighed. Desperate times called for desperate measures.

He reached out and slowly placed one finger on the statue and sent off a silent prayer. If this and his visit to Maurice Richard’s grave didn’t work, then he wouldn’t know what to do anymore.

A few steps ahead, Edward took out his phone and snapped a picture. No one would ever believe him if he told them that Étienne had willingly gone to and touched the Gretzky statue.

This would serve him well in the future. He already knew.
