“I think that guy with the red shirt’s been checking you out.” Étienne near yelled in his ear.
They were dancing close, the music of the club pulsing through their veins. Étienne had brought him out to this specific club and so far, Edward liked the place very much. The music was good, the drinks kept flowing, and the people in the club seemed to having a grand old time.
“What?” He shouted over the music.
“The guy by the pillar. Red shirt. He’s been checking you out. You should totally go up to him.”
Edward saw Étienne’s grin turn three different colours as the lights flickered from green to blue to purple. They seemed to be synched with the music and as his friend moved to the rhythm, it gave him an almost lofty air. He tried to be subtle and turn around to see what Étienne was talking about and sure enough, the man with the red shirt raised his glass at him. Edward was even sure he saw him wink at him.
“But I came here with you...”
There were times when Edward wasn’t sure exactly how this thing with Étienne worked. It seemed as though Étienne genuinely did not care what they did and that this relationship was very... open. Edward was still new to the game and he still had much to learn, despite being a very eager student. It wasn’t that he wasn’t interested by the attention of others, but he didn’t want to hurt Étienne’s feelings by spending time with someone else.
“So? I’ll still be here. C’m’on man, go, have fun. Let him suck you off, or suck him off, if that’s what you wanna do.”
Edward took a step back from their close stand they had been in and looked at Étienne. There was nothing about his body language that suggested his friend was upset about this, or that he was setting him up out of petty jealousy. If anything, Étienne seemed very encouraging about this development. Edward wasn’t sure he would ever understand the way Étienne’s mind worked.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” He asked to be sure.
Étienne grabbed him from the waist and spun him around. “Of course I am. I’ll be here - or maybe I’ll do some exploring of my own. But go. Tell me all about it afterwards.” Étienne nudged him in the direction of the guy with the red shirt and waved at him cheerfully.
--
Étienne watched Edward walk away and went to get himself another drink. Edward was still new to the scene and he needed to let loose and explore his options. Étienne was glad he could be there for his friend and help him during this important change in his life.
He gave Edward two enthusiastic thumbs up when the other man looked his way and laughed to himself when Edward and the guy with the red shirt started dancing precariously close.
There really wasn’t any jealousy or malice in him. He didn’t see what the point was in tying one’s self down and he firmly believed in exploring one’s options. Love was not for people like them and humans did not even live long. This way, they could have all the fun without the attachment or the pain.
To his greatest delight, the guy with the red shirt whispered something to Edward’s ear and his friend nodded. Edward then took the man’s hand and led him away from the dance floor to somewhere more private, he assumed.
Étienne took a drink to that.
--
Edward stumbled back towards the bar, half an hour or so later. He tried fixing the collar of his shirt, but knew it would be of no use to Étienne’s well-trained eyes. He ordered himself a drink and scanned the mass, looking for Étienne. It took him a while, but when he saw him, Étienne gave him a knowing grin and made his way back towards him.
“Well, well, well, someone looks well fucked.” Étienne teased. Edward tried to look bashful, or even embarrassed, but failed.
“And if I was?” He settled for instead.
“Good for you, man. Was he good at least?”
Edward hesitated for a moment and then nodded. “Yeah... he was, actually. It was fun.”
Étienne’s response was a loud laugh, before he raised his hand for a high-five. “Awesome! Hope you still have some energy left; the night is still young.”
Étienne winked at him and Edward decided that Étienne would remain a mystery to him, albeit a fun one.
