“We should do something this summer. Go somewhere.” Vincent said. The winter was dragging on and the thought of going anywhere warmer was very appealing.
“Ch’peux juste prendre une semaine, cette année.”/ “I can only take one week this year.”
“I know, but we could still go away for a week, question de passer un peu de temps ensemble et relaxer.”/ “...spend some time together and relax.”
“Chuis entièrement d’accord. Où voudrais-tu aller?”/ “I totally agree. Where would you want to go?” Vincent sat down next to Jean-Pierre and he pulled him close.
“I don’t know. Obviously not anywhere too far, but somewhere in the south, maybe?”
“J’dirais pas non. On pourrait aller à Cuba.”/ “I wouldn’t say no. We could go to Cuba.” He threw in. Vincent sat up and looked at him.
“No. We’re not going to Cuba.”
“Pourquoi pas?”/ “Why not?”
“Because. It’s so... so...”
“Québécois?”/ “Quebecker?” Jean-Pierre offered.
“Oui! All your people go there. I want a vacation.”/ “Yes!...”
“T’es même pas au Québec.”/ “You’re not even in Quebec.”
“Non, mais j’y suis marié.”/ “No, but I’m married to it.” Jean-Pierre ignored the comment.
“Es-tu même déjà allé à Cuba?”/ “Have you ever even been to Cuba?”
“No, but -”/
“Alors, tu sais même pas c’est comment.”/ “So you don’t even know what it’s like.”
“I’ve heard enough about it.”
“Oké, on peut aller au Mexique.”/ “Okay, we can go to Mexico.” Vincent looked even more affronted.
“No. I want to get away from here.”
“T’es en train de stéréotyper les places, juste pass c’est populaire pour les québécois.”/ “You’re stereotyping the places just because lots of Quebeckers go there.”
“I don’t want to be associated with low class tourists.”
“Merci, c’est gentil.”/ “How very kind of you.” He sounded a little hurt.
“That’s not what I meant, but it’s so... common. So... not classy. I want a real vacation.”
“T’es même pas allé. Tu sais même pas c’est comment! Ch’te pari que si c’tait pas pour les québécois t’aurais dit oui.”/ “You haven’t even been. You don’t even know what it’s like. I bet you that if it wasn’t for the Quebeckers you would have said yes.” Vincent fell silent. Jean-Pierre wasn’t exactly wrong, but he wasn’t about to say that.
“That’s not the point. I want somewhere less... gaudy.” Jean-Pierre looked at him, and for a moment, neither said a word, facing each other off. Finally, Jean-Pierre broke the silence.
“Tsé,”/ “Y’know,” He started, perfectly calm and Vincent tensed, fearing where this was going.
“No - don’t.”
“On pourrait toujours aller -”/ “We could always go -”
“Don’t say it. Anywhere but there.”
“Y’a toujours -”/ “There’s always -”
“Stop!” Jean-Pierre smirked at him and paused.
“La République Dominicaine. Ou... la Floride.”/ “The Dominican Republic. Or… Florida.”
Vincent let out a frustrated scream.
