They had celebrated many things last night. For starters, La Mozaïque had been eight consecutive months out of the red after a bad slump, Vincent had received a promotion at work a few weeks back, and they had reached their fifth wedding anniversary.
Jean-Pierre had made them an excellent meal, as usual, to celebrate all of these happy occasions and they had uncorked a bottle of champagne they had been keeping for a special occasion. On top of it, Vincent had bought a nice bottle of wine to go with supper and everything had been perfect.
They had gotten drunk on the wine and on each other, which had led them to stumble to their bedroom, a giddy, happy, if a little clumsy mess.
Perhaps all of their reasons to celebrate had made them a little more eager than usual, but they hadn’t held back. It was late when they finally called it a day and drifted off to sleep, entwined together in a tangle of limbs.
That was more or less how Vincent found himself, the following morning. Jean-Pierre must have shifted during the night, for he was using him as a pillow, sleeping contently on his chest. Vincent watched him slumber for a moment, a gentle smile coming to his lips. He started caressing Jean-Pierre’s bare back, before his hand found his way to his hair, playing with the soft brown locks.
Five years... he found it astounding that they had made it to five years of marriage. He never regretted his decision to marry Jean-Pierre, but if he was honest with himself, there had been times when he had wondered if they hadn’t rushed into it.
Everything had happened rather quickly and impulsively.
Vincent still recalled the morning when he had woken up next to his lover, at Jean-Pierre’s old apartment, and he had realised that he wanted more than shared weekends. He had found Jean-Pierre nestled close, fast asleep, just like this morning, and he had felt a surge of love for him.
He had held him close, nuzzling the top of his head, feeling perfectly content. As he had watched him sleep, Vincent had promised himself that he would work hard for this to turn into something frequent and regular.
After they had moved in together, a similar moment had happened, one morning. He had come to the sudden realisation that he wanted more than simple living arrangements. He wanted to share his life with Jean-Pierre, for as long as they both wanted to. He wanted to be more than his lover, and vice-versa.
Therefore, the moment he was back in Ottawa, he went searching for a wedding ring. Luckily, Jean-Pierre had simple tastes and was quite traditional, when it came to things such as wedding bands. Finding the ring had taken less than an hour, figuring out when to propose had been slightly harder.
When the occasion presented itself, one fine August evening, as they watched the fireworks, Vincent had acted on impulse, feeling that this was the perfect moment. He had been surprised when Jean-Pierre had presented him with a ring of his own, and he hadn’t hesitated to accept.
There had been bumps along the road, over the last five years. It hadn’t always been a walk in the park and many fights had left him wondering if this had been the right thing to do. There were a few where he had genuinely re-evaluated his decision and he had wondered if breaking up would be wiser. He didn’t like thinking of those downs, but luckily, every time, they had managed to talk things through.
Yet, he still thought of those darker times and the things he had said to Jean-Pierre, or the insults Jean-Pierre had thrown at him, in the heat of their fights. If he thought back to the past five years, however, the good times outweighed the bad ones and there were more of the good days than the bad ones.
He never regretted his decision and he was glad they were still on the same page. For as long as they both wanted the same thing, he would do the best he could to make their marriage work. He loved Jean-Pierre, there had never been a doubt about it, and watching him sleep in his arms, peacefully at ease, served to strengthen that.
Jean-Pierre shifted in his arms and nuzzled his neck. Vincent stilled for a moment, but then resumed his caresses. He knew if he had to start over, he would do it in a heartbeat, with no hesitation.
