First day of finals out of the way!!!! YAY!!!! Only had 1 final today. Had AP College English first period today. It went alright I think. It took a long time. I mean it wasn’t a long test, and the questions weren’t that hard, it was just making sure I comprehended the questions to the best of my ability that took the most time. I made sure that I ( Read more... )

I respectfully disagree. re_butt_al January 28 2006, 22:07:53 UTC
I disagree with some of the basic points of your argument. Notably, in what way does improving the "team mindset" affect individual successes? The fact is, Speech Team is composed of many individual performances -- the Speech Teamers are on the team because they want to win. They owe no obligation to the team, and thus the amount of commitment they are willing to put in is entirely up to them. You're right when you say that people would be benefiting the team by stepping up, but they have no duty to do so ( ... )

whomever you are, you are a coward. Disagreeing with me is one thing, but calling it NAZI CAMP and posting without identity is quite another.

I don't think this has anything to do with cowardice. You and I both know that your mom would kick me off the team if my identity was public. Besides, you don't gain anything from knowing my identity. I speak from an honest perspective, and this way, I don't have to mince words.

Regarding the Nazi reference, I refer you to this line from your rant:

I know, those of you that are reading this are going to push it in my face that some of my friends are from DGS and that they are the "Nazi's of Speech".

And finally, an appeal. I participate in speech team because I enjoy it and because I enjoy the people on it. I believe that if Speech were to become such a regimented, draconian system as you described it, it would no longer be the stimulating, enjoyable activity it is today.

Beth, I think it's insulting to say the problem is the team. I didn't quit because of my teammates, I quit because of how the team is run. In any team respect is a two-way street.

I am proud to say I achieved success in Speech, and I did it without any of the policies you listed. In fact, I probably wouldn't have achieved that success if those policies had been implemented.

Just thought you should consider that.

that is a total amount of bullshit, but whatever. You did not respect your team mates when you were on the team, and you arent respecting them now that you are off. I agree that there are problems with how things are run, and that is part of what I was trying to get across... The people who thing there are major problems are the ones that do not talk to the team about what they thing is going wrong. INSTEAD, they go and write shit ass editorials thinking they know everything without getting the FACTS.

just thought YOU should consider THAT.

Howdy. Thought I'd jump in at some point because...well...speech is important to me. Has been since I got here and will be long after I leave. First, though, I'd like to say that I firmly believe it's possible to discuss this activity without making personal attacks. It's below the belt and unnecessary, not to mention counter-productive if the idea is to build some kind of team spirit. Which, by the way, I think we absolutely have. I completely recognize the source of your ideas, that structure and discipline will breed success. I think it should be noted, though, that speech is a performing art, and at least half of all the artists I've encountered thrive in a free form environment. I am one of those artists. I live in personalized chaos and it's all I could ever want from speech. When I think of the team in Speech Team, I see warm and tired faces still marked with pillow case lines. I see people talking and laughing and keeping one another company during the very long Saturdays we spend away from home. If speech is about ( ... )

the only reason I began getting protective, and i guess making "personal attacks" is because someone on our team began doing so to me. At least that is how I see it. I still dont know who this person is. I apologize to Chris for attacking him, but I do get defensive when we have to start the year out with some editorial throwing out accusations on how we wont do well this year from a fellow team mate. At the time of that article, Chris was still Technically part of our team, so thats where I took offense. I believe I may have been a little harsh with my wording of the situation, but I do not deny any of what I said. I have said it before, and if it comes up again, I will say it again ( ... )
