2009 Movie Count

Jan 04, 2009 20:55

For the first time in four years, I'm not setting a goal for 2009. This year's is just for the sake of records. Gotta focus on college, graduation, jobs, and things like that..

Below is a list of all the movies I have seen in 2009, the chronological order in which I saw them, the date of viewing, and a short review comment I have about the film. Disclaimer: spoilers may be present. "*" indicates a repeat viewing. "+" indicates a opening night midnight viewing.

Pretty silly but too extreme to fully enjoy.

Reminded me a lot of me and Michael. It was a cute, funny, and edgy story. Liked it a lot.

Good story that could have been told in 20 or 30 minutes, not drawn out into long tedious scenes like it did. So many times it seemed the cameraman merely set out his equipment and walked away for a smoke break. The abrupt ending was curious and arrogant too.
BRNG1245: Cinemateque for All

04.
The Chumscrubber

Loved it. The perfect suburbia is so perfect it's scary in the Stepford Wife way. Camilla Bell's character was stupid and the final kiss sealing the movie felt like a copout unnecessary happy ending. The kidnapping and some of the other things the adults ignored were exaggerated but it's true that "it's for school" gets kids out of most everything. The medication speaks a lot about our society too. I'd definitely watch again.

August Rush

Wow, that was unbelievably bad. With its cliche story, cheesy dialogue, constant shots of hope-filled eyes from everyone in the cast, and redundant music scenes, this movie didn't have a single outstanding thing about it. Even Freddie Highmore, who I usually love, overplayed the cute and turned it into a saturated commodity. Ugh, this was real bad.

Slumdog Millionaire

Stunning shots. The way the love story was told through questions on Who Wants to be a Millionaire was creative and intriguing. I ruined the ending for myself, though, because I knew the answer to the final Musketeers question.

Cute but dumb little high school romcom. NYC was of course the biggest redeeming factor. Had to stop multiple times to Google Map background locations. Cool that I could recognize some without aid, too. Good for a very laid back, derrr night.

Lost in Translation

4
Slow and pretentious while trying to be deep but ended up confusing. What was the message, then? What did that final kiss mean? Nothing was resolved. But like I said, it was a tale of companionship between two lonely people, not a sexual affair. That I can relate to. Also, I now understand the appeal of Scarlett Johanssen's beauty.

Seemed like a hokey, cheesy, extended music video. Didn't flow well as a movie musical. And casting Meryl Streep was awkward. Most everyone was awkward in this movie except for the lead girl.

Solid coming of age. James (Jesse Eisenberg) was alright, kind of like a Michael Cera knockoff. Kristen Stewart annoys the hell out of me. Has she ever smiled or been non-emo in her life?

Flat. Didn't really seem to have a point to it other than showing what it's like to teach in an inner city school with children who aren't motivated. I did like that Mr. Marin was not a new teacher though, as that is the usual point of view taken. Very matter-of-fact and real.

Hannah Takes The Stairs
10/28
4
Some good insights at the end when she talks about being manic with crushes, and the bit about depression medication is interesting. On the whole, however, the film was kind of pointless and Hannah was bland, especially her bumbling "like, I don't know" rhetoric. (mumblecore #2)

68.
Pan's Labyrinth
10/30
7
Was getting frustrated with the first half, so thank goodness things picked up in the latter half. It was nothing like what I had expected--scary, tense, and dramatic--but very beautiful in a gothic way and sad in a humanistic way. The ending matched del Toro's "The Orphanage" finale which I actually appreciated. They are both so nontraditionally hopeful.

Not your typical scary movie. Pretty good!
apt: Wilson

70.
The Hangover

Don't really understand why it was the standout comedy of the summer. It had its funny moments, more than average, but it's no Anchorman or Zoolander.

Most of the shocking facts I already knew but the accompanying images were brutal at times. If not for time, I would have liked them to dive deeper into each chapter topic presented. A great beginner film for those new to the issue.

I Love You, Beth Cooper
11/18
4.5
The first hour was torture. Horrendously bad. Only because of a need for completion did I bring myself to finish the movie the next night, and good thing because the second half is actually surprisingly good and funny. How opposite the two halves were. Everyone was pretty bad at acting, but I enjoyed Rich's movie quotes!

74.
Twilight: New Moon+
11/20
3
Everyone being moody and angsty makes me stressed out and depressed. Not even halfway through I was wondering if it was almost done yet. I don't think I have ever seen Kristen Stewart smile. Not in pictures, not in movies, nowhere. Rob Patt looks like shit as always. The pace was effing slow and half the time I couldn't understand what they were saying because of all the mumbling. Let it be said that New Moon sucks. Redeeming factors: constantly shirtless Jacob and the misty scenery.
Wabash Landing 9: Yagana

75.
Assassination of a High School President
11/21
5
Not a fan of mysteries in the classic form. It was even stupider at a high school level. Reece Thompson as Bobby Funke was hot, though, as was the head Mullins brother.

In Search of a Midnight Kiss

Everyone sucks at acting, and the main girl is not one bit likable. I didn't give a shit that she was pregnant, I even thought she deserved it for being such a bitch at heart. (mumblecore #3)

No longer fresh out of a breakup, it didn't hit me quite as hard as I thought it would. Also, I don't like Zooey for the same reason I don't like Kristen Stewart: they're both stoic, slow, and sluggish. Joseph, on the other hand, gave an A+ performance that encompassed emotions on all spectrums, sober and otherwise.

Good dramatic style and all the male leads are strong, but Stephanie was super weak. I really liked the way the scenes are edited together.

I wanted to give it a 4.5 but the story is just too ridiculous and impossible. Love doesn't work like that. Only Steve Zahn and his bumbling Mike character bumped this movie to a 5 because he somehow managed to actually be cute and charming when it easily could have been plain stupid and annoying. Aniston gave the same old, dull performance she usually does. It was also interesting how this film maintained such an intense indie feel despite its big names.
