They don’t get to spend all that much time together when he revisits Radiant Garden, what with having to destroy Heartless and find lost friends, but, the one night he does manage to stick around for, Yuffie takes him everywhere she can think of. They stock up on items at the shops, throw rocks as far as they can across the ridge, skateboard around the sewers and, at the end of the day, they lay on top of Merlin’s house and watch the stars blink out one by one.

Sora puts his hands behind his head and stares at the flickering lights with a slight frown, and as much as she isn’t used to seeing the normally cheerful teen scowl, she knows why. Every blinking light was a deteriorating world, a world he thinks he could’ve saved.

“Sora,” she says, rolling over onto her stomach, chin propped up on her forearms. “You can’t save every world. You’re fifteen and barely through puberty. You aren’t God.”

Sora sighs, the frown receding, and looks at her, big blue eyes, too blue eyes wide and oddly blank. Yuffie bites her lip; she’s never seen that look on his face. That expressionless look that worries her so much, because he’s younger then her, but he might as well be fifteen going on fifty. She leans over and prods him in the side, grinning widely, hoping to relax him a little.

“Cheer up, you loser. Once you defeat The Organization, everything will be like it was before the Heartless. Just focus on staying alive and kicking some ass. Besides, I like you better when you’re acting like a goof.”

His lips quirk upwards and she beams, because the spark is back in his big blue, too blue, true blue eyes.

“Thanks, Yuff,” he says sheepishly, the quirk of his lips turning into a full blown grin. “I got a little depressed there, didn’t I? But, you sure know how to cheer a guy up.”

Yuffie sniggers and sits up, running her fingers through her ink black hair.

“No problem,” she replies, watching the stars and the sky and the clouds that never were. “I’ve got Mr. Sunshine to deal with over here, remember?”

Sora sits up next to her, grinning wider if possible, and laughs softly at the nickname she’d affectionately given Squalleon. She smiles and ignores how close he is to her, shoulder to shoulder, because she hasn’t liked him that way in a while, and he’s already in love with Kairi anyways.

“Starry skies,” he mumbles, looking up at the sky. “Man, these bring back a lot of awesome memories.”

Yuffie looks at him, curious, and pokes him in the cheek.

“What are you babbling about, hero-boy?”

Sora grins one of his toothy grins at her and stands up, hands behind his head again. She follows suite, brushing off the back of her shorts as she stretches her legs out. He grabs her hand suddenly and pulls her backwards, towards the opposite side of the roof.

“While I was travelling worlds,” he says, backing the two of them up until they’re almost teetering on the edge of the stone building, “I went to this place called Neverland, and I met this boy who never wanted to grow up. He was looking for someone important to him too, just like I was looking for Kairi. Anyways, he had this fairy named Tinkerbell, and he told me that as long as you believed, you could fly. With a little help from a pinchfull of pixie dust, of course.”

Yuffie looks over her shoulder at the cobblestone below, shadows scurrying along the walls of the alleyway beneath them. Sora keeps talking, eyes lighting up even more then usual as he recounts his adventures in Neverland and remembers flying through the air as if he were, literally, weightless. He grips her hand tighter and pulls her forward, jogging slowly.

“It was night time when I got there, and the skies were so clear and full of stars. Stars that never blinked out. It was amazing. I felt like I was on top of the world when I flew around.” He picks up the pace and Yuffie starts to get nervous, because they’re halfway across the roof now and she has no clue what’s going on.

"I want to fly again, Yuffie,” he says suddenly and she almost trips over her feet as he tugs on her hand almost urgently. “And I want you to fly with me.”

She finally regains her voice as the last few feet of concrete stretch out before her, as he takes the last few strides and pulls her along for the ride.

“Are you crazy!”

Sora jumps, pulling her with him. Her legs scramble to regain their footing, footing that isn’t actually there because they’re not on the roof anymore and they’re falling too fast. Sora laughs and Yuffie wonders if maybe she could use him as a pillow to cushion her fall. Suddenly, he grabs her hand and with a grin, yells:

“Aeroga!”

The wind picks up, toying with her hair and his as it wraps around their bodies and lets them hover, suspended by invisible hands. She looks down below her and bites her lip. She’s used to leaping over things. Leaping was different from flying and hovering in mid-air though. Leaping meant ground at the beginning, forever in the middle, and ground at the end. There was no ground at all in that moment though, only space and Sora, who was twisting and spinning her around in circles. Her head spun, but she pulled herself together long enough to enjoy the moment.

Slowly, they descend, though neither notice, as they’re still spinning. Neither of them actually realize they’re on the ground until Yuffie’s boots hit the concrete and she stumbles, the sudden stability catching her off guard. She veers sideways and lands on her back, wind knocked out of her, Sora leaning over her worriedly.

“Yuff! Are you okay? Say something, quick.”

Yuffie laughs and grabs his gloved hand, yanking him down next to her.

“You dork. That was terrifying. And absolutely exhilarating.”

He chuckles.

“Yeah,” he says contently. “I guess it was. Obviously, it’s not as fun as actually flying, because you can’t really move. You’re hovering more then anything else, really. But, still. It’s the closest thing I’ve got, so I’ll take it with a laugh. It’s fun, isn’t it?”

She nods and pushes herself up onto her elbows, staring at the brick wall in front of her.

“I’m going to remember this moment forever. I feel…I feel…I don’t know what I feel. I feel countless. Never-ending…” she trails off, eyes unfocused.

“I feel positively infinite. That was so full of awesome. Thanks, Sora.”

He looks up at her and smiles a little.

“No problem, Yuff. I don’t suppose you think we should move? Last I heard, lazing around in darkened alleyways when there are Heartless rampant isn’t the best idea.”

She snorts and pulls him up, punching him in the arm lightly with a smirk.

“You’re such a lazy douche. How did you ever become the Keyblade Master?”

He shrugs, still smiling, and follows her out of the alleyway, posture becoming less relaxed and casual and more rigid and alert. Yuffie doesn’t blame him. With Heartless lurking in every corner, how could he risk letting his guard down?

“Now I know what you meant,” she says, twirling a shuriken in her hand. “About feeling like you were on top of the world.”

A trashcan tumbles sideways a few feet next to her. Sora’s Keyblade is out in an instant, her shuriken brought up in front of her. But they don’t stop talking.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” He asks as a Heartless scrambles towards them, antennae twitching. She nods and watches another one follow it, then another, then another, until they’re completely surrounded by a group of lurking shadows.

“Well, duh. But, the next time you decide to take me on a spontaneous trip off the roof…” She crouches low as the Heartless move in closer, yellow eyes bright like his. A creepy comparison, she thinks, as two of them lunge. Sora’s Keyblade slices through them with ease as she throws pointed weapons at the ones who’d remained still.

“….Warn me first.”
