Short version of post: What are your thoughts of following trends? Jump on, avoid like a plague or who the hell cares?!

Long winded version:I have lost touch with web design for quite some time, something I will cowardly put the blame onto my school. My sites have always been static HTML, or PHP files for the sake of easy navigation switching ( ( Read more... )

I don't think you should worry so much about following trends. I tend to avoid trends I perceive as either superfluous or ridiculous (i.e. most of them), but every once in a while something interesting and creative becomes popular. Imo, the idea of a blogzine sounds pretty cool (and way better than all those terrible flash-heavy design sites), but I think you ought to choose what you're most comfortable with.

Trend or not, do what's most suited for your requirements, in this case, what's more comfortable for you.

Trends are somewhat touch-and-go in my opinion. There's got to be a line in the sand where you stop and say "Is it trendy because I like it, or do I like it because it's trendy?"

You should be proud of something that becomes more popular as you enjoy it, that's really honorable! But if you just like something because everyone else does, who do you become at that point?

But really, just do what makes you happy. If you make a website that turns out to be a copy/paste of Joe Internet down the street, who cares as long as it makes you smile?

Whatever you do, have fun with it and it'll have been worth all the while :]
