SCENARIO: It is 1574. The seventeen loosely united Dutch Provinces are engaged in a life-or-death battle for independence from Spain, led by Prince William I of Oranje. Renowned for their maritime tradition and virtual monopoly on naval trade at the time, the Dutch are nonetheless struggling to survive as a coalition, let alone a sovereign nation. Dirk Kuyt, a merchant sailor just trying to keep out of the way of all this, finds himself caught up with a band of pirates determined to forge their own way in the waters of the English Channel.
