I think it might make you feel better, if you don't consider those years wasted. You did have fun didn't you? You have learned something from all of this, have you not? I think you've definetly grown, and I know I believe that anything growth should not merit regret or the label "waste". But that's just my opinion, I do hope you feel better about things, and I'm sorry if my comment has only annoyed you.
And as for the selfish vs. putting yourself first thing, I think the only difference really is people feel "bad" about the first, and don't about the second. When they shouldn't for either. It's healthy, and in any relationship it's necesary. Maybe for not all of the time, but depending on the person, when they need it.
