Spoken word poets should be banned from performing poems about being a spoken word poet or poems about poems.

It lacks the same kind of validity that a definition does that uses the word it's trying to define in the definition.

also, one of the aims of slam poetry is to bring poetry "to the masses"... kinda not too effective when the poems are full of "insider" jokes and whatnot. I mean who cares that writing poetry gives that poet a woody? Not I, said the brown cow.

Hmm, I don't see this. There are plenty of books written about books, and art about artists. The point of a definition is to explain something precisely, for a practical reason; to me, the point of poetry is to get across an emotion or to communicate something, and there are emotions involved in creating poetry and lots of things about the process of writing or performing to communicate.

And I can see the fun of insider jokes occasionally too - metahumor can be interesting for its own sake, if it's not used too frequently. YMMV.
