Ok, so apparently “news” was too strong of a word which generated undue interest in my life, ha ha. I just have general boring updates, sorry to disappoint.
So, I actually had the 4th and 5th of July off this year - ::GASP!:: The afternoon of the 4th I went to a BBQ with my roommate and some of her non-SeaWorld friends. They were all very nice people and I met a guy with a very cool accent. When he first came up and joined the little circle I was in his accent was immediately noticeable and I was trying to place it when someone asked where he was from. His response that he was from South Africa surprised me, as I know quite a number of South Africans and he did not at all have the classic South African accent - I could hear it there somewhere, but it certainly wasn’t pure. The puzzle was solved when he revealed that he more recently spent ten years in New Zealand. South African + Kiwi fit perfectly and I was satisfied (see, I told you my news was uninteresting! LoL).
Around 9:00 pm I took off so I could be home with the dogs I was sitting for. They were nervous, but my arrival home and the introduction of tennis balls eased their anxiety tremendously. On my way back from the BBQ I got a call from work letting me know that I was going to be working the midnight to eight shift on Friday.
Later I went out went out with some of the synchronized swimmers/divers from my show. We first went to this bar and my “21 in 2007” ALMOST worked. The bouncer literally told me to go ahead then called me back and caught it. =^P I think if it had been busier or if I had walked in with the group I would have made it, but oh well. Fortunately my crew had been there for a few minutes already and were getting ready to move somewhere we could dance. We piled into my car and headed downtown.
Our first stop was The Bottom, the favorite gay bar. Unfortunately it was dead and they were charging a cover, so we went to a smaller gay bar. I was struck that they had a single, unisex bathroom with several stalls, but thinking about it there really would be no point in having separate bathrooms… Our first stop was the bathroom, where a rather flamboyant man tried to hook me up with the diver. Had he been taller, single, and not in the closet (with possible exception of his girlfriend, most of us are fairly confident he’s just stuck in the closet), I may have been interested; but I did get to cop a free feel of his abs out of it. And they were very nice abs indeed…
Anyway, sadly we had arrived just too late for the drag show, but we had fun dancing. Another flamboyant individual was hitting on one of the synchro girls. It was funny, he kept saying, “You are SO cute! I LOVE your outfit [the group had decided to do an impromptu costume night]! If I wasn’t gay, I would totally make out with you right now.” We hung out until closing then finally made it home around four.
Thursday was entirely uneventful and I went to bed at midnight. At 12:18 am I get a call from work: “Do you know you’re supposed to be working tonight..?” I replied that I had no idea, and as soon as he said that it occurred to me that hey, midnight = Friday now! Oops. I’m an idiot. I apologized profusely, threw my uniform on and raced to work. I made it at about 12:50 am. I had it in my head that the “midnight shift on Friday” meant Friday NIGHT, but my stupidity came crashing down very quickly once I got the call. The worst thing was all day I wasn’t sure of the date so I kept wondering if I was working that night then assuring myself, no, it’s only Thursday and I’m not working until Friday. =^\ Fortunately Chris was a good sport and was not working a morning shift the next day. I still feel terrible, though.
Needless to say, despite getting a late start, that was a very very long night. By myself, sitting in a watch tower watching whales swim in circles, with no music nor caffeine, I was praying for thunderstorms to roll through to keep me from falling asleep. Sadly non did, but very fortunately my relief came at seven so I went in to help with the fish break out for an hour before I left.
Sadly I could not go straight home to bed as I had finally given up and made an appointment with a dermatologist for my fingers. He really was not help at all as far as diagnosing it (he literally asked me what I thought was causing it and offered no opinions of his own), but he did prescribe me a stronger cortisone and a super moisturizer. I have high hopes that it will help. We shall see. At the least the cortisone smells really nice!
So for the last several days “nocturnal” has taken on a whole new meaning for me. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sleep more than five or six hours during the day, but fortunately I was better equipped the remainder of the nights with company (there were two of us watching), snacks, and large doses of caffeine - I think I’ve given myself an ulcer by now. Sadly Starbucks closed early on me all but one of the nights. Oh well.
Oh, and we're having a cricket infestation! Truly, it's ridiculous. They're covering the walls, we had to skim them off the surface of the pools for fear that one of the whales might inhale one, they're constantly landing on every part of your body, and when you drive the cart around you hear a continuous popping from all the crickets that you're squishing. I'm wondering if they're truly crickets and not locusts. =^P Oh well. I'm just grateful they're not spiders or roaches or any of the many things that would be worse than crickets. I keep saying that we need to start netting them up and selling them to pet stores as feed. At least we'd turn a profit! Irony of ironies: apparently Aquarium just got a whole shipment of live crickets in, ha ha.
Last night was my last late late shift, at least for a while (I’m hoping for all summer). I have two closing shifts (noon until 9:30 pm or 10:30 pm) and one 7 am to 7 pm, then I get one day off, then it starts again. I was thinking about it, and I'm really not sure that I've had a single five day work week this summer. I may have had one. But know I've had two seven days, one eight day, and one four day. And at least two of my "weekends" were single days. At least I’m racking up the hours! My paycheck should look nice…
