The problem with the tests on literacy is that the studies seem to think they can judge literacy levels of people by asking them, "How many plays, novels, and short stories have you read for pleasure in the last year?" when obviously printed text is not the only form of text that makes a person literate. You know, you shouldn't get all cranky about things like this, you should find out more about it and figure out why you -should- do what you 'feel is right' because teaching on a whim is bad. I'm doing an honors thesis on literacy levels>students>video game RPGs next fall, for example, because I think that the 'illiterate adult' argument is bullshit, too. But it's one thing to be given crap on a plate, it's another thing to toss it out entirely (and then you have nothing at all).
