I loved Spike just attacking Buffy out of the blue. He's right to be angry, she didn't give Xander or him a head's up about The Count. It's funny that he realizes it was because of Drac's thrall, but still whales on her. Spike just enjoys putting her in her place. His complete dismissal of Riley was amusing, too.
I also enjoyed Buffy and Xander's talk. This is a hard time for Riley, and at least here Buffy has someone to talk to about bridging the widening rift. Xander's right, Buffy needs to decide if Riley is really what she wants and then be honest with him. At this time in canon she and Riley weren't doing a lot of talking. He was feeling more and more marginalized, and Buffy was busy ignoring it. I can't wait to see how you're going to handle their imploding relationship.
Spike being woken out of a dead sleep by Dawn's magical manufacture was compelling. Again, I wonder how her insertion is going to veer from canon.
Spike and Buffy just don't see things from the same point of view, which frequently puts them in conflict, even though their truce is pretty solid and they work together well. And he's not going to be buddies with Riley any time soon. Unfortunately for Riley, no one really seems him as someone who rejected the Initiative, but as someone who'd still be in it. It is a hard time for him, he's having to deal with all sorts of things: losing his extra strength, discovering that almost everything he'd been taught about demons was wrong, you name it. In canon, it just seemed like he and Buffy were never quite in tune, despite how much they cared about each other.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you explain Joyce risking her younger child's life by letting a known vampire (Spike) into the house. I don't mean now, I mean earlier, that summer when Buffy was gone. The first time, she didn't know. But, the second time? Wouldn't a responsible parent have been a bit more careful? Wouldn't Giles have mentioned about invitations and dis-invitation spells? Wouldn't Buffy have thrown more of a fit over it?
