This is just a one-shot that I wrote for the summer_of_giles My posting day was yesterday, so I'm putting it up here today. Ok, it would be a one-shot, if LJ would allow slightly larger posts. Seriously, it's like 4 pages too long.

After that, I really am going to finish proofing, editing, and re-posting NTS Books 3 & 4, including linking the chapters. ( Read more... )

This is just lovely.

"There was no harm in getting to know the young man a bit better, find out what Xander was like now that he’d graduated and spent a summer on his own. No harm at all, given that he had no intention of acting on any attraction he might possibly be feeling"

Nice reasoning as to why Giles never trained Xander - I often wondered about that.

I really think there has to be some reason he never trained Xander, otherwise its just criminal. I mean, 'If I don't train him, he'll quit', will only take you so far. Sooner or later it has to cross your mind that Xander isn't quitting...

It's taken me a while to get back to this post, but I've had the page bookmarked since it appeared.
This is lovely. The mixture of unwillingly acknowledged hints of his true feelings and teeth-gritted determination to do the right thing, is beautifully mixed with canon to present a picture of the private Giles that the 'children' never saw.
Off to read the rest.

And it's taken me even longer to reply - sorry, I was out of town for about 10 days.

That's exactly what I was trying to portray - the adult Giles the kids never saw. *sends hugs* You make me feel like I succeeded.

I've spent a lot of time wondering that myself.

OMFG I KNEW there was a reason I needed to look at anything you might have besides NTS. ...I think I'm facing the very real threat of your work becoming an addiction.

The whole "Giles never trained Xander because he was attracted to him" concept is...well...it makes a LOT of sense. Almost too much sense...

The parallel between hyena!Xander and Ethan was interesting. I can see it...kinda. Keep making me see canon stuff differently like this and I'll never be able to watch Buffy again! J/K. ...well...not without my head doing a little spinning anyway.

...I should really go read part 2 now.

Exactly - I mean we know there were male strippers because Xander was one for one night (unless he was lying and he did it all summer *g*), but was that an occasional thing or were all the strippers men? I like to think of Xander as having his eyes opened to other possibilities while he was in Oxnard.

And, hey, there had to be SOME explanation for why Giles didn't train Xander...
