It was clearly another cold day. Luna had prayed that the snow would melt soon and give way to spring, but as she looked over the icy patterns on the windows she knew spring was a long way off. Winter felt so much longer now. The dark days and sleepless nights didn't help her mood much. It was as though the sun refused to come out, knowing of the evil which now roamed free.

She sighed and drew herself from her bed. Her father had done well for himself and after his passing she moved back into his large city home. As she moved through the bedroom, Luna felt a tug at her heart. She pushed the longing for her parents to the side and tried to focus on the task ahead of her today. Today she would have to reject Neville's proposal.

She stood before a mirror, brushing her long blonde hair. He had always said her hair was layer after layer of sunshine. But there had not been any sun in their lives in many years. She set the brush down and went to change. Pulling a simple blue dress over her slim body, Luna stopped to brush her hand across her stomach. If only their child had survived, things would be different. She could picture them now, a warm and loving family. That was a life all but lost to them now. And in a few hours it would be lost and completely forgotten.

It was true that at the end of things, you often think back to the beginning. Luna made her way through the home, her mind diving back into memories from the last several years. From when she and Neville fought alongside their old friends at the Ministry. To the service for Neville's parents who had finally found some peace. To the first time he kissed her and how nervous he had been. In her mind, Luna watched Neville become a stronger and more able man. There weren't any wizards left who thought of him as a fool. He was know for his ability to breath life back into any plant. He was admired, respected and even loved.

But not by her. Not by the one person who he truly loved. After almost ten years of knowing each other, Neville had quietly insisted one night the Luna become his wife. Her heart was still racing from their time in bed together, and Neville's request shook her to her core. Never once had she thought of creating a life with him or any man. Marriage was not something she wanted and love was certainly not something she desired. Her parents had been so in love that after her mother's death her father was never the same. In a world where darkness was a constant threat, what chance was there for a happy ending?

She absently pulled her wand out and conjured a fire. Setteling into a large armchair, she awaited Neville's enterance. It was only a matter of time. While she waited, Luna stared out the window, tracing each pattern the frost made with sad eyes and a heavy heart.
