Moving to Oregon

My husband and I are planning to move to Oregon summer or fall 2009, and are flying out for a week in August 2008 for research (and R&R).  We currently live in Pennslyvania, so this is a big move for us.  We're still dabbling in research of which towns to definitely visit in August to help decide where we should move to in Oregon.

I'm moving to Oregon next year, too! My fiance has been living out there since November and loves it. He lives just outside of Portland in Beaverton, but I'm not sure how far that is from the coast. I was out there in February and it was beautiful. Portland's a nice city and the view of the mountains in the distance was awesome.

I'm sure you'll love it. I'm really excited about moving out there. Good luck!

Beaverton is about an hour away from the coast, maybe a touch more. 65 miles, by the map, if I recall.
To the original poster: I'd recommend Portland because of that reason alone, it's an hour and change from the beach, but it's also an hour from the mountains if you're the skiiing type, and Portland has a ton of things to do. I'm a recent Portland transplant, after having lived in Salem and Corvallis my whole life, and my only question now is 'why didn't I do this years ago?' The fishing here is awesome, too. In fact, so many things here are awesome that I'd run out of time trying to explain it all. :) But if you ask, I'll surely try..

I talked to my husband more and we're now leaning toward the southern part of Oregon, about 30min-1hr drive from the coast. We'll definitely love to visit Portland. I love going to museums and dining out at new (to us) restaurants. We're flying in and out of Portland this August and driving up and down the coast, so we'll definitely check out the city.

We're now looking for a smaller town to live in and settle down. Any southern Oregon towns near the coast that jump out at you that would be good for us to check out?

Thanks for your suggestions. :) We're now leaning toward southern part of Oregon, about 30min (1hr tops) drive from the coast. Small towns OK; looking to live in the country. Any towns down in that area that you think would be good to check out? (And I do hear Florence and Cannon Beach are nice. We'll have to visit those too.)

Appreciated,
Becky
