Sweet potatoes

I have some nice healthy sweet potato starts that need to go into the ground in a week or two. From what I've read sweet potatoes grow best in fairly light poor soil. I'm thinking along the lines of digging a patch of my clay up, adding copious amounts of peat moss, some lime, and a little bit of mineral powders and manure. What do you think ( Read more... )

I've grown mine in pots so never know how to do it in the ground. In California, they won't let you buy sweet potatoes from out of state and I have yet to see anyone in this state growing sweet potates to sell as plants. My best best is going to Middle Eastern markets where they're less likely to spray an antiretardant on them and wait for them to sprout.

Oh dear -- that's not what you asked though, is it.

I thought that the way to get sweet potatoe starts was to use tooth picks to suspend half of a mature spud in water, and when they sprout, the sprouts send roots into the water. The sprouts are then put in a starter mix.
