Feb Club: Feb 4-5th: Favorite Sports Moment

In honor of the Super Bowl - a favorite moment in sports, either played by you or something professional you remember still as somehow iconic or awesome.

For me, it would have to be Sarah Hughes' free skate at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, where she just gave the rare performance of her life at the moment it counted and jumped from 4th to 1st. One ( Read more... )

For me it's gotta be Kurt Gibson's walk off home run in the first game of the '88 world series*. (He came in to pinch hit as a last effort, despite the fact that he was injured and couldn't run.) Watching him limp around the bases was truly memorable -- and it was the moment i realized that sports is (at least for me) all about the stories...

*With apologies to all you Bay Area types, my grandpa is a Brooklyn boy who remained loyal...

I vividly remember watching the last game of the '96 world series in a hotel room in Gettysburg on my junior American Studies field trip with redhound, who couldn't have cared less. Rivera was the setup man and John Wetteland was the closer, and he always, *always* allowed a run to drive you crazy if the yanks were up by two before shutting them down.
