So, the use of the very mercenaries that certain people are howling about is because those same people didn't want an actual combat-ready military? That would be so utterly shocking if I knew absolutely nothing about history. Hmm, how long before the Varangians start staging palace coups to make sure that their favorite becomes Avtokrator?
Well, that was how it started anyway. Uncertain how wide it has gotten by now. I know we used contractors for a lot in Iraq. Probably Afghanistan too
