In order to accurately cover Aono's past the entire series has to be spoiled. Read at your own risk~
Four hundred years ago (at least) from the "present", Morimiya Aono (17?) and her younger brother Morimiya Yorito (15) were orphaned. It is not directly stated why or how or when, but that at 17, Aono had nothing for family but her younger brother. Their village believed in the curse of a "Yoru no Wazawai" (Calamity of Night) or "Yaka" and that they had to sacrifice someone to it every once and a while to appease it. A "Yaka" is an immortal human supposedly born from dark and awful emotions. They each have a special power and the ability to turn dead humans into Yaka as well, but they cannot touch direct sunlight, as it burns them---literally. They catch fire. But they can self-heal...when not on fire.
Anywho,Aono is the lucky young lady who has to go to the Yaka's sun-less cave and be sacrificed. Because Yorito loves his sister so much, he decides to come with (as an extra sacrifice? To see his sister be eaten? I don't know, it's a plot hole). There, they meet a girl who goes by "Shihou Matsuri". Yay for another vague part of the series~~ two scenes in the show conflict here, so I'll try to make some sense of it. There's a point where Aono and Yorito live with Matsuri, oblivious to the fact she is the Yaka, but eventually, they learn of it and are just fine with it. Yorito continues to visit the village every once and a while and brings food back to his sister and Matsuri, telling the villagers that "yep, sis got eaten". Aono and Matsuri become very close and Aono learns that Matsuri wants to see the azure sky; however, because she cannot be exposed to direct sunset, she can only come out on cloudy days. To cheer her up, Aono and Yorito paint a fake sky on the cave ceiling and the 'family' of three spends their days laying back and pretending to watch the clouds.

However, rumors begin starting. Villagers have seen Aono and are wondering why she'd not dead. Realizing that their happy life is at risk,Yorito and Aono plan to run to another village, but they want to bring Matsuri with them--- they don't care that Yaka are supposed to be bad luck.
But things don't go as planned.
A storm (? or something really bad that brings buildings down?) hits and Yorito is caught in the rubble. He dies, leaving Aono to wail and sob in the mud puddles by the building that covers her brother's dead body. She comes to the conclusion that, because she did not sacrifice herself to Matsuri, her Yaka bad luck is accidentally seeping out. Devastated by the lose of Yorito, and not wanting to live on without her precious younger brother, Aono goes back to Matsuri's cave and slits her throat. When Matsuri comes back and finds her new friends/family dead, she too breaks down. Matsuri kisses Aono and brings her back to life as a Yaka so that she doesn't have to be alone anymore, but Aono is no impressed: she wants Yorito. However, Matsuri cannot find his body in the rubble and he is simply too pancake-d to be brought back. Aono does not run out in the sun and kill herself, even though she'd rather be dead without Yorito...plot hole? She clearly does not like Matsuri, because after this, Aono and Matsuri are enemies.

For the next way-too-long, Aono sits in her cave and sulks. She discovers that her Yaka powers allow her to make paper out of nothing and make things out of it-- like the ultimate origami. If Aono wants a knife, her paper creates a real, sharp and metal knife. With her new talent,Aono starts to make an origami Yorito and, when it's complete, she puts all of his memories in it and creates the illusion that he never died.

Hundreds of years pass; the series does not say when Aono completed her new Yorito, but three months before the start of the series, she moves with Yorito to a new seaside town (what's it caaalled?). Soon after arriving, she collapses 'randomly' (probably because she was exposed to sunlight while trying to live a normal life) and is hospitalized. Yorito stays at the house that they own and 'attends' school (he spends most class periods on the roof taking pictures of sky, which fascinates him to no end). After school, he comes to visit her and brings her a stuffed animal from a very strange stuffed animal shop; everyday Aono tosses it into a basket and comments on how he has an odd concept of cute (and he really does).

While in the hospital, Aono meets Koyori Ishizuki, a young girl in the hospital because of (PLOT HOLE). Aono shows Koyori an origami trick (you make a boat and have the person hold one end, then switch the boat's angle while their eyes are closed). Koyori is amazed, so Aono begins teaching her origami. They quickly become best friends despite their age difference. Aono also meets Mana, Koyori's older sister, who goes to class with Yorito; Mana and Yorito are soon close like siblings (Okay,Mana has a crush on him,but hush hush it's not obvious!).
Time passes.
Aono's birthday is coming up, so Yorito asks what she wants. She says a picture of the sunrise. So Yorito goes out on a mission to get a picture of the sunrise at 4am. While setting up his camera he sees Matsuri kicking a vending machine, but he does not have any memory of her-- heck, he doesn't have the memories Aono supposedly put in him. He doesn't know he's paper, by the way.
There's some stuff here that really only concerns Yorito-- he discovers Matsuri is a Yaka(he doesn't know about Aono) and invites her to live with him. Aono does not matter until she discovers that Matsuri is living with him after Koyori goes over to get her something. She's not pleased, and not too long after, she confronts Matsuri in secret and tells her to go away. Matsuri agrees and leaves the house around the same time that Aono comes back-- the hospital sees no reason to keep her if she checks in every once and a while since they never found anything wrong with her.

Yorito agrees to take Aono out after school for some sibling bonding about a month after Matsuri leaves. They go around town (it's raining, so the fact she's a Yaka isn't revealed) and chat. But Yorito is depressed about Matsuri leaving (because he's in love) and Aono doesn't like that. She ends up getting drenched in rain, so he goes to buy her a towel; while at the store, he runs into Matsuri, who is buying tomato juice. When Yorito goes to chase her, Aono grabs his hand and begs him to stay with her instead, but he refuses and goes after Matsuri. POed, Aono collapses in an alleyway and uses her paper controlling powers to control her paper brother; she makes him stab Matsuri when he confronts her and then alters his memories to think they went out to a movie.
But Yorito's not dumby this time;he remembers stabbing Matsuri and keeps having nightmares about it,plus he's crazy obsessed with finding her. His obsession and makes him really sick so all he can do for a while is sleep. Concerned, Mana goes out on a quest to find Matsuri and cheer him up,but when she gets proof, Aono won't let her tell. While trying to keep Mana out of the house, Aono's hand goes in the sunlight and starts to burn. Mana sees this and realizes Aono is a Yaka as well.

Aono realizes that Matsuri's existence is the reason Yorito is sad, so meets her at an abandoned part of town to kill her. However, she cannot bring herself to make the finishing blow, and runs off. Mana has realized Aono is keeping Yorito sick so they can be together and kidnaps him to her house; when Aono comes asking for him Mana refuses to let her in. Koyori is oblivious to the Yaka business and is upset by Mana's orders for her to never interact with Aono again.
Mana then tells Yorito that she found Matsuri and Matsuri reveals to him that he's made of paper. They talk and come up with a plan to end this illusion once and for all. Then Yorito goes back to Aono, who is making french toast with Koyori. As Mana hangs out with friends, she realizes that they no longer remember that Yorito exists. Yorito says he is moving away with Aono. Aono is very very happy to be with her brother again. Matsuri gets a sword from a man who was trying to attack her for a while; apparently, if you take the life of a yaka with this sword and then stab another yaka with it, the second yaka turns into a human again. The owner of the sword,Takeshi, wanted to use it to help his yaka-girlfriend (insert lolicon love story).

That night, Matsuri has Yorito wait in an old theatre while she fights with Aono over who gets to be with Yorito-- her, who loves the current Yorito, or Aono, who loves the "old Yorito". Matsuri is about to finish Aono off as Yorito holds the screaming girl down, but the old movie projector kicks in a displays a video of the sky; after watching it,Matsuri drives the sword into herself, but to the horror of the two siblings.
Then Matsuri, who is weak from being stabbed, chases Aono, who is losing her powers after being wounded. Aono gets the upper hand and ends up in possession of the sword--unaware of its powers-- and attempts to stab Matsuri, but she stabs Yorito instead. He vanishes into a flurry of papers and Aono breaks down in a fit of sobs, trying to collect what remains of her brother.
Matsuri gets the sword and tells Aono it's time to move on from the past, Yorito, and face the world without him. As the sunrises,Matsuri stabs Aono and changes her to a human again, and it is assumed that Matsuri dies after giving Aono her life.

In the next half of the episode,Aono returns to her old house. Koyori and Mana have forgotten her because she wiped their memories when she planned to move, but she quickly befriends them; this time, Koyori is 'teaching' Aono origami and Mana is Aono's classmate once she re-enrolls in school. The ending leaves the impression that Aono and her new friends are happy and moving on, though they still share Yorito and Matsuri's love for the sky-- The fact that,in the end, two tomato juice cans are on a picnic table leaves the possibility that maybe Matsuri and Yorito's ghosts still drink that gross stuff or something. SEASON 2??? :DD.

Aono's personality can be summed in three stages that correspond with pre, during and post series. Because her personality is so heavily knitted in with what she thinks of Matsuri and Yorito at the time, I'm going to play her to have her personality shift with her memories.

When she arrives,Aono will have most of her pre series traits and some post series. She is cheerful and loving, the type of girl who considers those around her and is willing to put their well being above her own, as seen by her being willing to sacrifice herself. Aono is very friendly, being quick to befriend Matsuri, and looks at people for who they are,not what they're "supposed to be". She treasures her friends and wants them to be happy, going as far as painting a fake sky for Matsuri and inviting her to their family. Aono also loves her brother, and once she remembers him, it will probably show that she still tresures him and believes she can always be safe and happy with her brother by her side.

I can't predict perfectly how her later memories will change her, because she might make a friend or something, BUT, in theory.

Remembering that Yorito died will turn her emo. Aono is likely to build up on her happy memories to think her life is going to be great when she comes back,so this will be a huge blow. It's unlikely that she'll recover very easily. When she remembers being a Yaka, Aono will confuse herself, because she can still be in the sun and can't use her origami powers. She is likely to conclude that they've been stolen from her and cope herself in her room, making an actual origami Yorito like any lonely crazy chick. I predict that she'll become a recluse because she doesn't want to get close to people and out live them and she wants Yorito back, but without her actual origami powers to give her defininate hope, she probably won't emo as badly as in the original series.

She'll become a bit antisocial and hide her feelings more, and may make attempts to break friendships she has at the time... If you need an elaboration, let me know...It's hard to predict perfectly, but in short, she'll get sadder during this stage, happier when she remembers origami Yorito(but more obsessed with the past),depressed when she remembers Matsuri coming back in her life (maybe angry) and then the last memories will confuse her to death.

Her personality quirks are few.How sad. She likes stuffed animals, though, and shares her brother's love for the sky (her favorite is the sunrise). At the end of the series, she adopts Matsuri's belief that "all modern machines can be fixed with a good hard kick!", but since this is linked with liking Matsuri again, it'll probably only be at the end that the machines of Memento Eden are in danger.
She's very good at origami and develops a reflex at the end of the series that really only applies to Koyori (Koyori always calls her sister "Mana-san" instead of "Oneechan" and Mana would whack her when she said it, so at the end, even when they were 'strangers', Aono would try to whack Koyori for saying it). However,it may translate to others if they develop a habit that bugs her.
