... that's a load of nonsense.

There are some things that are never okay.

Chuunin... ?

Ah, well. Right now, I work as a maid.

Chuunin is the middle rank of ninja in our village. When you're just out of the Academy, you're a Genin; then you become Chuunin, and when you get really good, you become a Jounin. My team-mate Kakashi-kun is a Jounin now.

That's great! I don't even have a job here. I probably should find one, but I think I'm too young for most jobs.

Wow, there's a whole ninja academ? Now that's something I haven't heard of.

Well, if you're young, then you're not obligated to have one, as far as I know.

In Konoha and most of the other Hidden Villages (I think!) there is a ninja academy where children can learn the basics of the ninja arts.

No, I know, I get money from the City which is amazing! But I wouldn't mind working.

Uhm, wow. ... aren't ninja supposed to be, y'know... stealthy?

Well, then! For me, it's sort of a new experience, and it keeps me busy.

Well, we are taught to move quietly, if that´s what you mean?

I'd like to work too, but I think I'm too young for most places.

No, I mean, the way "ninja" is defined where I'm from, a ninja school being all public would kind of defeat the purpose.

How old are you, then? Maybe Turnabout Café might hire you...

They have ninja in your world as well? What are they like there?

I'm 13. I haven't worked that many different jobs - I do know how to be a medic, and I can fight a bit as well.

Yeah. They're basically spies.

... so young and already a soldier.

Our ninja can get hired for spy missions, but that's far from all we do.

I've been a soldier for several years. I never questioned it before I came here.

What else do you do, then? You say you are also a soldier and a medic.

... I'm sorry, it just seems so harsh to me.

Well, I used the word soldier because right now, in my time and world, my country is at war with the other great nations and their hidden villages. I'm a medical ninja, which means my job on mission and patrol is to stay out of direct combat as best I can and heal the wounded afterwards.

In peacetime, though, we can get all kinds of missions. Spying for intelligence on other nations, escort missions for diplomats, protecting the lords of the country. More mundane missions as well. When we were younger my team-mates and I often had to weed somebody's garden or muck out stables.

I guess it is harsh compared to the lives of civilians. It was my own choice to become a ninja, though. I wanted to protect my family and friends.

A war? Oh, gosh, I... I wish the best for you and yours. That children have to --

Ah, so basically, it's sort of a one-for-all kind of job?

And it's an admirable choice.

Thank you! The war ends, though. In my future, but in the present for some of the others from my village, who are also here.
And Naruto-san, my friend who wants to become Hokage, the leader of our village, wants to bring peace to all the nations.

Yes, ninja can be hired for any mission. We rarely refuse one.

I don't know... It wasn't much of a choice for me. The village needs all the help it can get.

Really? Then I sincerely hope he succeeds at that.

I see! Interesting, how different the meaning of a word can be in different places...

I still think it's admirable - that you want to work hard for the sake of others.
