She really hadn't meant to cause any kind of upheaval.

Everybody was being very nice about it, and, as the young captain had said, it wasn't as if anyone made the choice to be accidentally transported into another universe thanks to an equipment malfunction.

As Kirk had promised, quarters had been found, shifts arranged. She was established. It ( Read more... )

Pasha had finally been able to tear herself away from Emma's 'novel'- she had scolded herself at the time for calling it such, really it was nothing more then badly disguised smut with a poor storyline- and her thoughts to try and be sociable. For the first time in a long while she hadn't felt like running and had decided on finding a rec room instead.

Walking into the communal area she assessed the seating situation. Sitting with the wrong people with Starfleet was not unlike sitting with the wrong people in school. Deciding of a friendly looking woman she marched over and a placed a tentative smile on her face. “Excuse me, if you vould not mind, could I sit vith you, please?”

Uhura looked up. The officer addressing her was very young, very pretty, and, as far as she could tell, entirely unfamiliar. She smiled.

"Of course," she said, indicating the seat beside her. "I was just hoping somebody would show up and talk to me, actually."

She held out her hand. "I'm Nyota Uhura. Uh - not from this universe."

Well, that felt strange.

"It is nice to meet you Miss Uhura. I am Pasha Andreyevich Chekov." Nodding Pasha took her hand and shook it. The young navigator tilted her head to observe Uhura's face, she did not look the same as this universe or her universe's Uhura but they had the same air of natural authority and beauty.

"I am not natiwe of this uniwerse either." She admitted taking a seat next to her.

"Oh?"

Chekov. Uhura thought for a minute.

"You aren't, by any chance, any relation to Pavel Chekov, are you? He's a friend of mine, back home."

McCoy, strolling past the rec room, performed quite an impressive double-take when he spotted the suspiciously-familiar figure seated inside. He halted in the doorway, staring for a moment and wondering if his mind was playing tricks on him before venturing further in.

"Uhura?"

She was on her feet in an instant, face breaking into a wide grin.

"Doctor!"

She reached for him, gripped him by the upper arms in her enthusiasm.

"You're still a man!"

"Last time I checked." He returned her smile with a broad, lopsided grin of his own. "How'd you wind up here? And more importantly, how're you doing?"

He was also wondering how long it would be before their own ship back in their own universe ended up empty, but he kept that quiet.

Kevin's sense of surprise had been dulled significantly by all the things that had occurred since his appearing onboard, but some things, he just wasn't prepared for.

Like seeing Uhura sitting in a rec room onboard this ship.

"Uhura?" he asked. "Is that really you?"

Uhura looked up sharply. Oh. There was a face she recognized.

"Guilty as charged," she confessed, blinking at him. "I didn't know you were here!"

"I didn't know you were here, either! How long have you been here? It can't have been long, or I would've known. Does the Captain know you're here?" He realized how he probably sounded and gave her an apologetic smile. "Sorry.

Uhura laughed.

"No, no! Don't be sorry. It's only been a couple of days." She smiled. "And both captains know I'm here. How long have you been here?"

He had heard about the woman from two different communications but had never actually found the time to meet her. Even once he had officially returned command to Jim, he had spent the immediate time after that sleeping. Yet now, one the way to grab a parfait to sustain his glucose levels for another few hours--there she was. Or at least by logical deduction it had to be her, since he had not seen any manifest that had her face on it, and there were no other additional passengers that had not been accounted for.

Hands folded behind his back, more curious than anything, Sppock walked over to greet her. "Madam."

If there was any one person whose identity she could not possibly have mistaken, even across universes, this was certainly he.

"Spock!"

The word was out before she could prevent it. She remembered herself quickly; raised her hand in a brief salute. "I'm sorry. You are Commander Spock, aren't you?"

Already he was cataloging the differences and similarities between them. Not to realize any fault in her character or to prove his Nyota superior, but out of scientific habit. "I am." A slight nod, and Spock motioned to an empty portion of the couch. "May I join you?"

He was a little stiffer than the Spock she knew, a little more formal. But then, perhaps their Mr Spock had been like this, too, when they first met. She couldn't remember.

She noted his gesticulations, and nodded, shifting slightly to make room. "Of course. Go ahead."

Nyota Uhura loved her job. Even when it was difficult, she loved everything about it; the way she fell asleep hearing the white noise of nothingness, how she had people working for her. She'd earned it, after all, even if certain people chose to believe this position wasn't given to her through her own merit. Those people didn't know the tears she'd spilled during her years at the Academy, how low she could run herself in pursuit of what she wanted. So Nyota adored everything about her job.

But couldn't they go one shift without bugging her for something? This was supposed to be her day off, the one day she got in a blue moon when she needed a little time to be Nyota and not Lieutenant Uhura. Instead she'd been stuck in the comms lab, pouring over a mistranslated communication from one of the younger Ensigns. It hadn't taken long to fix, and there was no damage done, but then she'd had to spend the next hour consoling him that people made mistakes and it was totally fine even if it wasn't ( ... )

She would never have confessed it to anybody, but the truth of the matter was that Uhura knew, even before she raised her head, who she was about to see - and not just because of the playful quip. There was something about the voice that was oddly familiar, even while it was completely new, and the dark eyes, when she met them, were still more so.

There was no need to confirm the young woman's identity.

She said, slowly, "That seems to be a theme, from what I've seen so far."

She stood, as if suddenly gripped by the urge to measure the two of them against each other, although she could already tell that the other woman was indeed a little taller. Shaped a little differently, too. But there were definite similarities in their facial structures, and most of all in the other woman's gestures, in her stance.

"Nobody told you I was here, did they?"

The tone of the voice had made it obvious. Uhura knew that casual lilt all too well, and knew what it covered.

As the other woman stood (what should she even call her? Would they have to assign each other different names like the rest of them? Did this Uhura have the same protectiveness over giving out her name? So many questions.) Nyota instinctively straightened up and carefully considered her. It wasn't a defensive act, simply the best way to judge their differences. And there were some. Her own voice was a little throatier, her body a little leaner. Yet there were enough similarities to tell her this was definitely the same person. It was almost like looking at her reflection out of the corner of her eye; distorted, yet still her reflection.

"No," she replied, her jaw setting in a displeased manner for a moment as she shook her head. "No, they did not. How long have you been here?" It would be pointless to ask how, since none of them ever knew.

"A day or two," she said, noting the set to Nyota's jaw, but carefully avoiding passing remark on it. "But I wasn't able to actually find any member of the command staff until today. What with the captain being six years old and the First Officer being consequently overworked and not in his office when I called, it was a little difficult." She shrugged. "But then, I'm sure we're not making anything easy, arriving unexpectedly like this."

Even as she spoke, she was returning the inspection, some unspoken agreement stretching between them that this was all right, was only to be expected. Similarities and differences noted in other people were one thing, but it was so much more fascinating to have the opportunity to note them in another version of oneself.
