I went to the Veloway to skate today.
I noticed a new sign I hadn't seen before. There were always signs limiting use of the Veloway to bicylists and skaters, but this is the first time I've seen the sign actually specifically say "in-line skates" instead of "skates". I wonder if some drama went down between quad skate users or roller derby girls and the Veloway I'm not aware of. But i went anyways with quads and there was no "in-line skate police" to tell me to leave. I have speed skates and I'm faster than some of the lower-end in-lines skates. Today I took on "The Big Hill". yay. On my first pass, I walked sideways down the hill half way and skated. I'm such a scaredy-cat. It felt easy so on my next pass, I carved back and forth sideways the way you handle a hill on a skateboard 2 times as i went down, slowing my descent. No problems. Who knew my limited skateboarding would help with my quad skating. I logged 6 miles and felt i could handle more but work today kept me from indulging another 3 miles. In-line skates feel more secure on hills, but i get a better work out with the quads. I've heard on different forums that you can add rear brakes on quad skates for outdoors and hills. That would be nifty. I miss being able to slow on hills by doing something other than carving back and forth endangering all those behind me.
