As someone who was on a Swancon committee and ran the artshow (in the same year) I do not understand this threatening attitude they have with the ( Read more... )

I did think it was a bit poorly phrased, yes - despite understanding the sentiment. I'm sure you're as aware as I am that there's nothing more frustrating than people not participating early on, then complaining things didn't happen - or didn't happen the way they wanted - after the fact.

But yes, not the best method to attract volunteers.

Looked a lot like preemptive assignment of blame to me. Happens a lot when someone recognised in advance that they will be criticised for failing to achieve something.

I'm not volunteering for much this year on the grounds that sitting on 6 convention committees between 1997 and 2008 is enough.

No need to justify yourself as I'm not criticising you. However there's a clear difference between making the choice to donate your time and effort to a community project, which is usually an admirable thing to do, and disclaiming in advance any responsibility for how it turns out.

It was definitely poorly phrased. I hope what they meant was more along the lines of "If there's something you really want to see at the con, come and suggest it, otherwise we won't know what you want."

While I don't really care about the art show personally, it seems a tad remiss of the committee to totally abandon the concept unless someone else steps up.

I emailed the committee last night when I saw the email and they are sorting it out. The message that got sent out was not what they wanted to send out, and not what they're about. I understand that they're working to get an apology out there and demonstrate that the community is important and not at all what was implied in the message last night.
